My Story

Update 5/15/07

This entirely sweet pup earned himself the nickname of “Love Bug” almost instantly. He is completely affectionate and loving. While he may never be a jogger or a long-haul trekker, he will make a wonderful companion for someone who wants a snuggler and enjoys company on moderate walks.

Lehi is housebroken, loves all people, and is curious about but not pushy with cats. He gets along fine with other dogs, and would enjoy a buddy. But mostly he ADORES people, & would love to find a home with someone who will return that affection. It’s easy to do! He has a totally sweet spirit, & won his foster family’s hearts immediately.

I have only heard Lehi bark once. He likes to be where the people are in the house. He is very good about coming when called. His tail is always thumping. Lehi likes to play with toys, and hasn’t chewed anything yet that he wasn’t supposed to, although he did once move a slipper to a place he thought was more appropriate than where it was left. He is crated when we aren’t at home, but not at night & he sleeps through the night. He is still a pup, & needs to learn not to trip people, and not to paw.

We are working on building up his stamina. He can go down stairs no problem, but up is harder. After only three days, though, he was able to make it up both a ramp and the 10 or 12 stairs into our house. He tries to keep up with our dogs, but sometimes has to sit down and rest.

Lehi needs a special home, where his family is willing to accommodate his handicap, and realizes that his special heart far outweighs his missing limb. In return, he will give abundant love and affection.

This is a story about a wonderful dog named Lehi that will tug at your heart. A woman was driving out of town toward Little Rock, Arkansas on Thursday (I believe March 8th) and happened to notice a dog lying in the median off the Interstate (near Lehi exit, hence his name). Well, to her SHOCK, on her way back in town the following Tuesday, guess who was still in the same spot: YEAP. This poor dog had been there all alone, no food, shelter, or water, the entire time. Frantic, she called another shelter nearby, but the person on the phone told her they didn't think they could get the dog because the shelter does not pick up dogs on the Interstate (which is crazy I know, especially injured dogs that are alive!). The shelter was supposed to call her back and let her know whether they will pick him up. No phone call.

Feeling tremendously frustrated, the woman called the Memphis organization, Responsible Animal Owners of Tennessee, begging for help with this dog. Jeanne Chancellor, President of this group, said she would call The Marion Animal Shelter to see if they could help. Sure enough, Carolyn Tsironis (the supervisor at the shelter), immediately went out to search for the presumably injured dog. After careful searching, Lehi was finally rescued (the woman wasn't sure about the exact mile marker)! Anyway, this little guy wagged his tail as soon as Carolyn picked him up (he must have known he was being saved). He was unable to walk, due to an injury in his rear left leg (presumably hit by a car). Carolyn rushed him to a veterinarian in Memphis. They found out later that he would need to have his leg amputated because the damage was too great (apparently he had torn major ligaments in his knee as well as other damage). The kicker is that this poor dog had apparently been injured weeks ago and had been dragging his leg around. Lehi was lying in the median because he had almost given up (the vet said "probably waiting to die"). The lady who called regarding the dog fortunately offered to pay for the surgery (what an angel!).

Anyway, this miracle dog is now recovering in foster care in NH. Lehi is a very sweet boy. He is now able to take short walks, and even ran for the first time the other day!! ..but still needs to build up his endurance. Some people think he is a mix between a Plott Hound and a Black Mouth Cur (hunting type dog). Will you be his angel???

All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids.

Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending. For PUPPIES: SEE BELOW

This dog is Urgent because the shelter it is in is in Arkansas and is overfull, therefore dogs and puppies alike are on the euthanasia list. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us nasty letters about why we euthanize, this is not our choice, we do not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many of them as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
