My Story

Please contact Paul Slebzak ([email protected]) for more information about this pet.sweet girl ISO fresh start and love! LAIA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Laia Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of April 2024 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 54 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with kids or cats but she can be tested. Currently Living at: South Carolina shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get her freedom ride up here! Check out these videos of Laia: https://youtu.be/F_Kbr0biKi4, https://youtu.be/yHa7JWNmYPY, https://youtu.be/wFFbTPUP3Eo and https://youtube.com/shorts/HvBhDVO17YM. Special adoption considerations: Laia is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left.Laia is Looking For: Her forever home! This sweet girl came into the shelter bearing the evidence of a probably-not-so-awesome previous chapter - there are thin jagged spots of hair missing from her back, perhaps from being snagged on a barbed wire fence or scald marks. Heartworm positive. But you know what? That old chapter is firmly closed and she's eager for her new one. The one where she gets her own humans for long sniffy walks, romps in the park, and all the adventures they can dream up. Laia is out of the puppy yips and in her prime - and looking forward to being a well-loved dog, under her own roof, and bestowing all those adoring gazes and all the love and loyalty in her body upon her family. What do you say? Can you see her by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: We will update this once she has arrived in the DC area and spent some time with her foster. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
