My Story

Meet King O'Leary, he is a full blooded Karabash Anatolian Shepherd. Some one is missing a great dog but we dont mind because we are thoroughly enjoying his company. He was found as a stray outside of Little Rock in Pulaski County by Animal Services. County dogs only have 2 days at the pound before they are euthanized, very sad. This poor guy had either not been taken care of or had been on his own for some time. He is absolutely gorgeous! You won't find a more handsome Anatolian and he has a wonderful but typical Anatolian personality. When Dogsonly received a call that there was an Anatolian in the Little Rock shelter, we had the vet swing by and check him out. King had a huge knot on his right shoulder and initially the vet thought it was a tumor, possibly cancer and suggested that he might not be one to pull from the shelter because of the expense and care he might need. Well we just couldnt resist that face and those looks King can give you with his big ole eyes. Yes, King worked us and we sure are glad he did. He is King Manipulator. You see, King did not have cancer, that tumor was a 9 mm slug that had been there in his shoulder for about 4-6 months. King was shot with a 9 mm semi-automatic gun. The bullet passed between two of his ribs on his left side and landed on the other side of his body on his right femur bone. It missed all his vital organs in his chest and also did not injure his elbow or shoulder joints. It did however shatter part of his bone but missed his elbow and joints. The bone is already calcifying and healing. This shooting happened some time ago as the bullet wound was completely healed and the bone is starting to heal. The vet is not recommending corrective surgery at this time and feels he will heal just as well without surgery. He may heal completely or he might always walk with a limp but it doesnt seem to bother the 'ole King boy. He was opened up pretty good but has now healed after having 13 staples on his right shoulder. King is one lucky dog. The vet stated it was a miracle he was even alive. It was obviously whoever shot King was shooting to kill. King is an excellent home guardian dog. He will alert bark when anyone comes around he is not familar with but is also very responsive to a citronella bark collar when barking is not preferred. King adores children and his family but needs a home experienced with guardian dogs as he will not allow workmen, meter readers and the like on his property. He may be introduced to other submissive, smaller dogs on a slow basis but will not tolerate another animal trying to be alpha over him. He is a massive guy. He is about 32 inches at the shoulders and weighs about 130 pounds. He is incredibly strong and will need a physcially fit owner to handle him. He is very responsive to commands from a confident person. It is not known how King is with livestock and a non-working home or a hobby situation is preferred. King has completely healed from his gunshot wound. King is completely housebroken and is non-destructive. Since he is so large, he will need a secure privacy fence. He can actually jump up and easily see over a privacy fence and check things out when he feels something is going on. He has been worth every penny it will cost us to help fix him back up and get him going again in life. He of course laid down when it was time to go back inside and tested me to see if I was going to make him get up (typical Anatolian behavior). He still has a tad bit of puppy in him but not alot and is probably about 1 1/2 years old. He walks very well on a leash but is extremely strong and will need a physically fit owner to keep him in check when walking. He is heartworm negative and has been started on preventative. He was neutered at the time he was found. He is laying down in his photos because this is the most comfortable position for him with his injury. He is also thinner in these photos as we have not posted updated photos since he has "beefed" up and cleaned up a bit. If you would like to adopt King, please complete an online adoption application at www.dogsonly.org under adoption gallery. His adoption fee is $125 and covers all of his vetcare and surgeries (which were much more than $125). You may also send us an email at [email protected]
Since he is so large, he will need a secure privacy fence.
