My Story

Katie is a small, lemon and white female, about a year old. Katie was found wandering by herself. She is cute, full of energy, and likes people. Katie is now in a wonderful foster home where she is learning some house manners, and how to be part of a family. She is houe trained, crate trained and is learning some basic commands. She enjoys playing with her dog companion and loving on her foster parents. She is apprehensive at first of men, but will warm up given time. She needs a good home that can spend some time with her and is committed to making sure she receives the exercise and training that she needs. Adoption Fee:$200

Things you need to know about Pointers:

Temperament: Pointers typically are exceptionally sweet and enjoy lots of cuddle and ‘together’ time with their people. They are very social and generally do well children and other pets. Although they require a great deal of exercise they usually are very settled in the house.

Exercise: Pointers need and love regular exercise. Pointers love to RUN!! Although an hour's walk may be plenty of exercise for you and us, Pointers generally prefer to run. Pointers do tend to range off leash. They were originally bred to hunt wild birds and cover large areas of ground while their person is on horseback. So, while it is rare for a Pointer to want to run away, they typically think there is nothing wrong with going pretty far away from you when they are off-leash. Pointers can be trained to stay close, but it does take some extra training.

Obedience: All dogs benefit from formal obedience training, and it is very helpful in establishing a relationship with your new Pointer. Pointers are eager to please, and do well at obedience training. Pointers need fair, consistent, positive training. They will shut down if you are too harsh with them. Most Pointers make dynamite agility dogs and love to participate in the sport.

Many behavioral issues can be either resolved or made significantly better with at least 20 minutes of sustained aerobic exercise daily such as a run at the state park, throwing a ball in your back yard or jogging with the dog.

Fencing: Having a fenced yard makes owning any dog much safer and easier, but it is absolutely essential with a Pointer. Pointers enjoy being outdoors and exercising their considerable stamina and speed, and as they are bred to cover more ground than their human companion (to save effort when hunting with your Pointer), your Rescue Pointer might be inclined to follow his nose and stretch his legs more than might be good for you and him. A rescued Pointer will not be familiar with your home and boundaries and rarely understands traffic or roads, and must be safeguarded from his own instinct to hunt when not in a suitable place to do so.

Many adoptive homes have opted for invisible fencing which has been known to work very well for many breeds of dogs as long as training is not rushed. Invisible fencing is also a cost-effective alternative to conventional fencing and disallows digging and jumping.
