My Story

KAMMIE Courtesy Post) Female Border collie Aussie mix approximately 2 – 3 years, 45 lbs & AVAILA-BLE – check out more photos and see the rest of our dogs on our website -- https://norcalbcrescue.org/available-dogs/our-dogs/ Meet lovely KAMMIE. KAMMIE is a medium-rough coat, red and white border collie / Aussie mix, 2-3 years old. KAMMIE has medium to low drive, but her BC genes might become more pronounced with time as she’s had some adjusting to do. She is cautious around new people, especially men, but as time goes on, she warms up more quickly and becomes a love bug, giving kisses and begging for pets and attention. We’re considering KAM-MIE a bit of a “special needs” foster as her new human(s) should expect a period of her developing comfort, confidence, and familiarity with her new environment. That said, KAMMIE has shown no signs of aggression, rarely barks, and will be a loving and loyal family member for the one who is patient to give her the time she needs to adjust and trust. Since she has been in rescue, KAMMIE has developed fairly dependable recall, sitting attentively after she returns to you. She is extremely yet cautiously affectionate and prefers to be very close by her humans when they’re around. KAMMIE is perfectly behaved on leash and loves the daily walks/runs we take around the neighborhood with her foster sisters. She tends to have the zoomies in the mornings when the dogs are kicking up their feet, making sure all the squirrels have been chased away. KAMMIE is a polite guest and is not a nuisance at all. She is dependable to stay close to the pack when out and about. Loud noises and frenetic activity still startle and affect her, so a calmer, friendly environment would be key. She has benefitted from the stability and assurance that our dogs have provided her, so we believe a companion dog with a suitable demeanor could be helpful but not necessary. She has not been tested around cats or small children. KAMMIE currently weighs 45 lbs. (down from 51) but could easily lose five more with continued exercise and controlled meal amounts. She loves food and could eat all day if we let her, so we believe she will be treat-motivated as well. Obedience training will be somewhat delayed until her new humans develop a trusting bond with her, whereby she will be more apt to learn and please. KAMMIE strongly prefers to sleep in a dog bed or on the floor vs. a crate, so we’ve ac-commodated her. However, she remains fearful of car rides so providing a crate for car rides is a must. Although not an issue after a few days, she initially had anxiety when released into our backyard and paced looking for possible escape routes. She had easily scaled a four- foot fence in a previous stopover, so potential adopters must have at least a six foot, no-climb fence to keep her safe as she gets to know her new home. She hasn’t had a potty accident at all in her four-week stay, so we can presume she is totally house-trained. KAMMIE is an endearing dog, who will blossom over time in her forever home. Love and patience will be, of course, important, but also experience in socializing and training a dog that needs to grow in confidence and a sense of safety. She has already made progress in these areas in her foster home but will need to build trust with her new family. KAMMIE is micro-chipped, spayed, heartworm negative and on preventative, and up-to-date on vaccinations.
