My Story

Our shelter dog Jordie turns one today! This is a milestone that we feared Jordie would never reach when we transferred him from LC4 in March. Both of Jordie's front legs were injured - one most likely from jumping from a height and the other from being overused to compensate for the injured leg. Since he couldn't be adopted in this condition from LC4 they asked if we would take him and give him a chance. When we got him, he was walking on the top of the curled under left foot and barely using the other leg. He couldn't even get up the garage step or into and out of his cage without help and was pretty much shut down emotionally. No playing, nothing - just a look of sadness and hopelessness in his eyes. We took him to an orthopedic specialist who said Jordie would need one leg amputated and the other one surgically corrected with an uncertain prognosis, an extended and painful recovery - and at a cost of $10,000. The doctor also felt that with his injuries, humane euthanasia was an option. The cost was more than we felt we could spend with such an uncertain prognosis and as we felt he was showing some improvement and he seemed comfortable, we decided to take a wait-and-see approach and just give Jordie as much time and love as we could. Time and love must have been the right medicine for Jordie as he miraculously seemed to improve, and his personality started to blossom. He was a big goof and LOVED everybody and everything - cats, other dogs, people... and sticks, weeds and grass in the yard. He began to play. He figured out steps. He started to chase the other dogs in the yard. Everyone - cat, dog, or human - was a friend in Jordie's eyes. Potential adopters started to notice Jordie and we decided to get a second opinion so that we could give them a better idea of Jordie's future. Well, Jordie's miracles kept coming. The second doctor wanted to do a CT scan. After seeing the pictures of Jordie when we first got him, looking at the CT and examining Jordie she said that if she hadn't seen him for herself, she would never have believed it was the same dog. In her words, "I don't see an amputation in Jordie's future, and no surgery is necessary at this time, if ever. Jordie's ready for adoption." And even better, another client at the clinic that day with her dog was so smitten with Jordie's incredible personality and heart that she covered the $800 cost of his CT scan! Jordie's been with us about five months now and frankly, we weren't sure he'd even see his first birthday let alone be walking and running like any other dog.
