Jordan is a gorgeous 9 month old AKC Registered Black German Shepherd Dog "puppy" who just happens to weigh 80 pounds! If ever there was a gentle giant....It is Jordan. He was surrendered to CSR by a gentleman who had always wanted a a Black GSD for a companion. The problem was he was not familiar with the GSD breed and this beautiful boy who grew so fast and is so intelligent was also Very Bored. He still has some puppy awkwardness and the granddaughter was knocked down unintentionally outside. This GSD puppy had not been socialized nor had he been allowed in the house with the family. Being a good GSD he had to find a way to be with his people so he could "shepherd" them. This beautiful boy took the screens out of the windows in the workshop at the back of the garage.
CSR was called by the exasperated family and asked if we would help by taking "the dog". This 8 month old puppy was tied on a heavy nylon rope lead to what looked like a child's play house, not a dog house. The lead was so short when this boy was first seen by 2 of the CSR gals that he was unable to sit down or lie down. There was water for him to drink, but he could not reach it.
I was called and went over to bring the boy home to be with the other German Shepherd Dogs at the
" Stella's Shepherds" branch of CSR.
When I got to the house and we went into the garage and through to the workshop. We were greeted by a very happy giant size GSD puppy who had chewed through the heavy nylon rope and jumped through the window again in an attempt to be near his people.
The wife kept saying that either the dog or the granddaughter had to leave and it was not going to be the granddaughter. The frustration of the husband and wife was clearly seen. They asked again if we would be willing to take the dogs that night.....I had no intension of leaving this beautiful boy there a minute longer than necessary.
The AKC papers were signed over. Dog food and bowls were donated with the dog and we were thanked for taking the dog so now the granddaughter would be safe playing in the yard.
The man had said this was to have been "his dream dog". Sadly because he didn't understand the nature of the breed, this GSD puppy had become more like a nightmare dog to the man.
This "puppy" at 8 months old and almost 80 pounds was also strong enough to pull me right off of my feet. A training collar gave me the advantage I needed to be able to walk him on lead.
I named him Jordan because now he had the opportunity for his lot to fall in pleasant places.
That first night Jordan stayed in a 10 X 10. It was too late to make proper introductions to the other GSDs I was fostering along with my 2 personal GSDs.
This big puppy was starved for attention. When I first joined him in the enclosure with his supper, I braced myself for the jolt of Jordan jumping up on me so he could wash my face with his kisses. My glasses went flying to the ground. When I found them they were thankfully intact.
Lesson #1 was going to be not to jump up on Mom. When Jordan jumps up on the enclosure gate to greet me he is taller than I am. I used a technique from the Monks of New Skete and it worked very well. Soon Jordan was not jumping on me, instead he was sitting in front of me to be petted and leaning into me go hard that he frequently would fall over. I sat on a piece of upright log that served as a stool and rubbed his face and spoke softly praising him for sitting to be petted.
Lesson #2 was to walk on lead without pulling. With the training collar to signal that we were going for a walk, Jordan will sit to have the collar put on. After a few times of having him sit when I stopped walking Jordan understood and he will automatically sit when I stop walking when my feet are together. As soon as he sits Jordan looks up at my face. This attentive boy who delights to pleased combined with his intelligence will be a trainer's "dream dog"!
Jordan is the newest member of the 5 GSDs who sleep in my room. Jordan is now quiet and gentle in the house. He enjoys playing games with the other GSDs outside.
Jordan is like a completely different dog from the wild pup I brought home 4 weeks ago.
Jordan will need a person who will take him to basic obedience training and perhaps beyond to advanced training. He will only be adopted to someone who has had experience with the German Shepherd Dog. Jordan must be an inside family member.
