My Story

Jonah is one of the finest dogs I have met. He is a wonderful combination of a funny, silly, gentle, goober and a loyal, loving, highly intelligent companion and protector. He is equally comfortable with men women and even small children. He loves his toys and plays with them either with or without another dog or human. He does well with puppies and other dogs.
Jonah is a well rounded wonderful German Shepherd Dog.

Jonah is a very handsome 4 year old Black and Tan German Shepherd male. He was turned in to a high kill shelter county in upper SC.
Jonah had been turned in to the shelter by his owner who just did not want him any longer.....I just do not understand, Jonah is a wonderfully happy gentle GSD.

Jason had lost a lot of weight in the shelter. German Shepherd Dogs do not do well in the confinement of "shelter life". When I first saw Jonah he was in his cell looking so sad! He looked at me with what seemed to be pleading in in his eyes. He was just sitting there with his head down and his body hunched over. As I talked to him his posture began to straighten and his head lifted so he could look me in the eyes.

When I took this beautiful German Shepherd Dog out on lead he did not pull nor did he seem aware of the many dogs that were barking at him as we walked past. He was eager to get out into the sun light outside. As we walked he became quickly aware of his surroundings and his head came up along with his tail. This boy was enjoying taking in all the smells, sights and sounds around him.

We walked back toward the shelter and he lead me right over to my car....He knew he was going with me and which car I was driving....German Shepherd Dogs have a wonderful perception about them! On the ride to my home, Jonah enjoyed sharing a sub sandwich with me. Even though he was very thin and in great need of food, he took the bites of the sandwich in an easy manner. As we rode he settled down to enjoy the beginning of his new found freedom.

I named this GSD Jonah because he had been "swallowed by the shelter whale" and then found freedom in the sunlight. Once at home, Jonah enjoyed walking in the yard checking out all the new smells and getting a passive introduction to the other dogs in his new place. He began to feel comfortable with me and the yard and after a time of petting Jonah went around and started "marking" the yard to secure it as his yard now. Wile walking the fence line, Jonah got popped by the "hot" wire. He cried out and ran straight to me for comfort. I always hate when a new dog gets a somewhat painful surprise from touching the wire. However, having the fence "hot" quickly lets any new dog know to stay away from the fence. Since many of the dogs I foster have been picked up as strays it is very important that I have a secure fenced yard for them to be free to run, play interact with the other dogs and learn lessons needed to help them become ready for their new families.

Jonah met the other dogs one at a time and there were no conflicts. He walked around sniffing with his tail high next to Judah, my gentle Alpha male. They stopped and shared some fresh water together.
With all introductions made outside without problems, Jonah came inside to learn about the house. He felt strange in the house alerting on new sights, sounds and smells.

Jonah quickly became more comfortable with being in the house. He enjoyed his supper and the company of the other GSDs in the pack that follows Mom around. Jonah just seemed to fit right in from the first evening. His only problem was not wanting to go past the gate that opens to the back yard. He remembered the sting he had gotten from the wire on the gate. Jonah needed much encouragement to go into the yard along with the other GSDs after having supper. He will soon learn that it is OK to go back outside with out being afraid of the gate.

Jonah seemed to appreciate the bed he was offered in Mom's room when it was time for a good nights sleep..........What a difference from the cold hard concrete floor of his cell at the shelter! Jonah slept well and waited for Mom to wake up the next morning. Jonah will not eliminate in the house. He waits until he goes outside.

Jonah is a joy to foster. He does will with other dogs. He is confident in himself and does not feel the need to be dominate with any of the other dogs or th challenge Judah, Mom's Alpha male GSD. Jonah walks well on lead with a quick reminder that he is not to pull. He is interested in Joel, a 10 week old GSD puppy...interest without any agression.
Jonah is very attentive and has a strong desire to please. He will look up at Mom when he comes to sit. Jonah enjoys playing with a ball outside and he has started playing with several toys in the house. When it is time for a treat he will sit and take the snack gently even though be really would like to have all the treats.

Jonah will make an exceptional addition addition to his new family. He is a big gentle funny boy who will love his family and "shepherd" them to see that they are safe.
Jonah will only be adopted as an inside family member. His new family must know and love the GSD.
