Jody - German Pudelpointer - Male/neutered - 6 years of age - 60 pounds - reddish brown short to medium coat
Jody's story could be the canine version of the thrilling annals regarding the young Dauphin Louis, and the daring rescue that protected his royal personage until he assumed the throne of France.
Although Jody does not aspire to such an exalted position, he bears all the unmistakable marks of a fine and lustrous lineage, and the hallmarks of his rare and noble breed.
Only Jody is much more fun.
The pudelpointer is a beautiful and relatively unknown breed. "In 1881, a German breeder, Baron von Zedlitz, worked on producing his ideal tracking, pointing, and retrieving gun dog, suitable for work on both land and water. From seven specific Poodles and nearly 100 different pointers, he developed the Pudelpointer. The goal was to produce a dog that was willing and easy to train, intelligent, and loved water and retrieving, like the poodle, and add to that a great desire to hunt, a strong pointing instinct, and an excellent nose, like in the English Pointer, as well as being an excellent companion in the home."(Wikipedia)
Today's pudelpointers are held to exacting and rigorous standards in their field work. Jody could not hit those marks; extremely gun shy, his first five years were an exercise in failure, and resultant unkindness and mistreatment. A concerned huntsman intervened on Jody's behalf, and through his family's dedication, Jody is now a well socialized, extremely responsive, mannered, and happy dog. He is a wonderful companion.
In Jody one will see the robust athleticism, alertness, and great heart of a working dog who has found success and joy in his own back yard. His merit is judged by new standards of excellence - his devotion to his current canine foster brother, a big Labrador retriever, his impeccable house training, his eager, expectant demeanor, and his devotion and gratitude for an opportunity to shine in his own special way.
Sturdy and energetic, Jody has found life in a house to be very much to his liking. He revels in being touched and he returns those overtures with gentle kisses. His eye contact is direct, open, and curious, and he has an endearing way of cocking his head, as if he is giving tremendous and important consideration to what is being communicated to him.
Best of all, Jody has gained in confidence; he is a playful dog whose delight in being valued rather than scorned is touchingly obvious. His greatest joy, other than being loved (and perhaps eating) is to go exploring though the woods with his foster care provider.
Jody is fluent in the commands "come", "sit", and "lie down." His need to please and to be of purpose reflect a strong capacity for partnership with his human, and a deep desire to bond. He truly enjoys the company of other dogs, although Jody is not an appropriate companion for cats.
Jody is excellent on a lead, and a fine, energetic walking partner whose instincts will alert you to the presence of any errant squirrel or chipmunk who may be at large. His foster care providers are proud of Jody's newfound ability to meet new people without fear of reprisal, and if he is shy at first, he warms up quickly.
Jody's foster family is to be commended for their commitment to Jody, and their awareness of the immense value and goodness in this beautiful dog. Jody will reward his committed adopter(s) with devotion, and his own joyful wonderment that being loved, and returning love, are the most important standards of excellence for any breed of dog and any human being.
