-Snuggly, the moment you sit down, he'll be in your lap
-Adorable, his pictures don't show how handsome he really is with his golden eyes
-Non-barker, although he alert-barks when someone comes by, he doesn't bark for no reason
-Friendly, young, old or in-between, he hasn't met a person he hasn't liked
-Energetic but not hyper, he keeps himself busy with the other dogs or with toys, although he loves to go for walks too
-Well-groomed, he will let you clip his nails without any fussing
-Food-motivated, he loves his treats and should be a quick learner
-Loyal, he adores his person and will promise to always be your best friend
So... if you're willing to give this great little guy a warm lap and a little bit of training and exercise, you will be the lucky friend of one of the best dogs around!
Update 9/25/08: Sandy wants you to know two things right off the bat: He's not girlie in the least, despite him somewhat ambiguous name, and, maybe more importantly, he has NO interest in being a purse dog! He's high energy and more than happy carrying himself around on his four little paws, thank you very much.
Sandy, whom his foster mom has started calling Jimmy, is an exceptionally handsome 15 pound chihuahua mix. He has golden eyes, a beautiful blonde coat with a white chest, freckled feet and a curled tail with a white tip.
Just because he doesn't want to be carried, doesn't mean he doesn't love sitting in laps. He LOVES to snuggle and give kisses. Lots and lots of kisses. So if you'd like a lap dog who doesn't want to be carried around, he might be the perfect match.
Like many smallish dogs, Sandy exhibits a bit of a Napoleon complex. He likes to boss around the larger dogs and cats in his foster home. He's become good friends with the smaller dogs, though, and would probably do fine with a play mate close to his own size. He would probably also do well as an only dog.
Sandy is playful, and he loves toys and bones. He is crate trained, and sleeps there at night, and his foster mom says he even slept in over the weekend! His house training is coming along well. Sandy is treat-motivated and seems quite teachable.
He's got tons of youthful energy and will need regular opportunities for exercise. He's an alert little watchman and will sound the barking alarm whenever anyone comes near the house. He does bark at people who come inside the home, but he's easily won over with treats.
If you're looking for a loving, but tiny, bundle of energy, Sandy's your guy!
9/21/08 Sandy is in a foster home in New England! He is 15 lbs and pretty sturdy with a longer nose and a curly tail -- definitely a mix of some sort (maybe with basenji??) He is a very good boy and so handsome. Stay tuned for more updates and new pictures!
Because of his small size, he will not be adopted out to familys with small children. He gets along with all the other dogs, but especially loves Bubbles. Sometimes when he meets a big dog he will growl at first because he is scared but a quick correction puts him back into a calm state of mind. He would probably do better with a small or medium sized dog as a buddy but would also do well as an only dog

This dog is Urgent because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
