Update 2/18/09: Jetta has been doing great since she arrived in New Hampshire over the weekend. The resident dogs shunned her for a day but she's working her way into the pack and now is able to sleep along side them in the living room. She has tried instigating play but the grouchy old female lab hasn't allowed that yet. Jetta is being very patient but can't wait for a play buddy.
Basset hound and blue heeler is an absolutely adorable combination!! Jetta has the hound face, her body is long, her legs are short and her feet are big and dink-toed. The only indication of her heeler heritage is her distinctive gray coat with black spots. She is sooo cute. And when you combine that with her sweet and mild personality, you can't help but love her. She's won over everyone she's met.
As of 2/18, Jetta is 10 months old and weighs 30lbs. Even though she's still a puppy, she is very mellow. She has the easy going hound temperament. She wants to be with people and is thrilled when visitors arrive. She acts as if every visitor is a long-lost friend. She goes to the front of the pack to say hello and has impressed everyone with her friendly personality. She loves to be pet and will roll over for belly rubs.
Jetta crates very well and even lets her foster family sleep in on the weekends. She'll walk in her crate when asked, knowing she'll get a treat. She is discovering the fun in squeaky toys and sometimes gathers a few in her crate and takes a nap with them. She enjoys the security and comfort in there. But when the people come home, she can't wait to get out to greet them.
She is doing extremely well with her housetraining. She is VERY food motivated, she will gladly pee or poop outside for a treat or a little kibble. She's had very few accidents. With crating and consistency, her foster mom suspects she'll be fully trained in another day or two. It's hard to believe she's never lived in a house before.
Jetta is always leashed and is great about it. She only pulls when the other dogs are causing a ruckus and she wants to get in on the action. Otherwise, she just enjoys the snow. She loves to roll in the hard crusty snow to give herself back scratches. It's the first thing she does when she goes outside.
She is really a great companion. She loves people, will do anything for a treat and has been low maintenance. She will easily transition into a home with or without other pets. Some lucky family is out there for her!
Notes from our partner shelter: Lexus, Aston, Capri and Jetta are Basset/Heeler/?????? Mixes – aren’t they adorable! . They are certainly original looking! Their legs are just an inch or two longer than a basset hound's.
These pups were born April 16, 2008. There were originally seven (7) pups, but the owner was able to find homes for three of them. Their mom was run over. The remaining pups started to chase the owner's cattle so he decided that he must get rid of them ASAP. So sad. We are just grateful that he has decided to work with a rescue to place them, instead of just letting them go.
Jetta is about 8 months old in these pictures taken November 22, 2008. She seems to be more outgoing than her other siblings and is more willing to check something out. Jetta did fine with another dog that she was introduced with, even though she has only played with her siblings. Jetta let the 7 year old volunteer approach her without any trouble. When we cat tested her, she just sniffed and walked away, both times. Jetta weighed 24.8 pounds when she went to the vet on December 1 to be spayed. We do not think she will get much bigger.
These pups are a little shy when they first meet people. They have not been off the farm other than to go to the vet and come to the shelter to get shots and have their picture taken. So being a little afraid is understandable. The owner says the pups are very friendly and playful around the farm with each other and people they know. With some love, stability and consistency, they will be great family members. Let’s get them a home by Xmas!

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".
If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
