Ivy

IVY IS NOT AT THE LAWRENCE COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY SHELTER. SHE IS CURRENTLY RESIDING IN ONE OF OUR FOSTER HOMES. When this beautifully marked girl was impounded in the shelter as a stray, she was VERY, VERY pregnant and due to deliver her babies any day. Ivy gave birth to 8 puppies on 9/10/04. One puppy died immediately after birth and then, one by one, without any symptoms or warning whatsoever, the other 7 died over a period of 10 days. By 9/20/04, they were all dead. Their deaths were very likely the result of Ivy's poor nutrition and lack of basic veterinary care. With routine feeding, Ivy weighed 34 lbs. by the end of September. Estimated at 1-1.5 years of age and standing 18" tall at the top of her shoulders with a torso measuring 18" long from the base of her neck to the base of her cute 5" cigar-shaped tail, Ivy will not get any larger. She has a wash'n wear coat, and her eyes are the same gorgeous color as the lighter shade of her sleek coat. It is very likely that this unusual looking girl is predominently Mountain Cur, a breed traditionally used for hunting although they make wonderful family companions as well (as do most hunting breeds). But is also very likely that she has some Terrier, Boxer, and/or Beagle heritage mixed in. Ivy is ot a big barker (considered a negative trait by most hunters), but she is very energetic. She has had exposure to cats in her foster home, and there have not been any "incidents". She can be very docile until she has other dogs with whom to roughhouse. She is well suited as a playmate for well-mannered children of elementary school age. As long as other dogs continue to be rambunctious, Ivy will join in the rowdiness with her play. For bonding and safety's sake, obedience training is always recommended for any new canine addition to a family. Ivy's intelligence will make her a fast learner, and she and her permanent family will be much happier when she learns to focus on their wishes. She obviously has had a deprived life as she does not know how to gently take a treat (obedience training will "cure" this); she has a 12' long scar (ranging from 1/4 to 1/2" wide) running along her backbone in the middle of her torso--possibly from barbed wire or worse; and she was not protected from breeding. Ivy has now been heartworm tested, started on heartworm preventative, vaccinated and spayed in readiness for her new home and new life. With a minimal investment in the time to obedience train this good looking girl, you could have an envied canine family member for the next 12-15 years to share love, fun and other wonderful memories.
