My Story

Family dog alert! Horton is a calm, inquisitive, outgoing, smart, super-duper doggie! There is little doubt that he could be an outstanding dog for a family with school age children. He hasn't been around many kids in rescue but met some at an adoption event and did fine. And his temperament is so, so child-friendly! He is a gentle fellow who takes treats delicately. And how about those ears?! Horton wants to be able to hear a Who if he is anywhere around Whoville! Horton is 10 years young. Horton does not come across as elderly. He has the tranquility and confidence of age. He probably won't be up for an athletic life, but is far from a decrepit fellow on his last legs. Horton seems to like going for rides. The window needs to be down about six inches so he can stick his nose out. If he's not doing that, he's sitting up, watching the world go by. Other dogs cu*rl up and snooze, but Horton likes seeing things. He does fine with other dogs, but he would likely be fine as the only dog too. He enjoys being around people so doesn't need a quiet household. He enjoys going to work with his foster mom. When there, he settles down to stretch out on the carpet but then he gets up and follows you from room to room, checking out what is going on. What breed is he? Horton is a beagle, that's for sure. But mixed with what? He has long legs. He has perky ears that have floppy tips. But he also has patches of mottled coloring around his neck similar to a blue heeler. What does it all mean? All we know is that he is one darn fine hound dog. He had been a stray, that's all we know, but he certainly had lived in a home. He easily settled into his foster home, finding food and water, using the doggie door, patrolling the perimeter of the yard. Sleeping on the bed. Oh yes, he knows what a people bed is. And he likes it. Horton walks acceptably on a leash. He doesn't heel, and he occasionally pulls, but he is fairly good. Horton uses the dog door to come and go, and goes out to potty on his own. If his new home does not have a dog door, there will be a learning period as he figures out when and how to find the designated potty spot. Horton will stay in a crate but he doesn't enjoy it. He has not shown signs of destructiveness in his foster home so crating does not seem necessary. Horton is fostered in southeast Nebraska about halfway between Omaha and Kansas City. His foster will be happy to meet a prospective family at a halfway point so that they can introduce themselves to him and experience his awesomeness for themselves. Horton is neutered and has had all his shots. He will be chipped soon. However, Horton is heartworm positive, and he is beginning treatment for this. Following a month of taking an antibiotic, there will be a month delay, and then he will undergo an injection, and another the day after that. This should kill the heartworms, but it will be vital that he remain on heartworm preventative the rest of his life. If interested in adopting Horton, please fill out the adoption application at www.bassetandbeagle.org. His adoption fee is $350.00
