This is what his foster mom has to say:
"Harvey's a very sweet dog and he's made his way quickly into our hearts. He's really easy and a very good dog. He's beautifully house trained. His teeth are bright white; his body is solid as a rock and in great shape; and he's very strong. He's very well behaved when he's getting a bath, so he's able to stay sweet smelling and silky soft. He's not a chewer or a face licker (which I find very nice), but he loves throwing himself into your arms to receive hugs and kisses and adores loving gazes.
He's learning to live with cats – he likes to bark and lunge at them. He doesn't mean any harm, he's just excited. A few warning swats and spits, have caused him to show greater respect, and now he's beginning to relax more around them. I'm hoping they'll end up good friends.
And Harvey's vocal at times. He barks at cyclists (and would chase them if he were off-leash), and he barks initially at people who come in at work, until he gets to know them. He's getting lots of socialization with humans -- he's really great with kids -- gentle and mellow. He seems to need to have his primary pack person with him. He's become strongly attached to me and shows some separation anxiety when I'm out of his sight -- until he's distracted with food, and then he forgets all about me. At bedtime, settles down quickly in his crate, which we keep in the bedroom, so he feels secure."Is Harvey the dog for you??
Update: 02/07/06: Harvey is being fostered in Connecticut, here is what his foster mom has to say about him. " Harvey is a very smart beagle boy. He learned to use the doggie door in just one day. Harvey listens well and tries very diligently to obey. He is sweet, charming, good-natured and oh so cute. His feet make little "pitter-patter" sounds when he walks. When Harvey's foster mom hands out bones, Harvey takes his and runs like the wind, to a hiding spot beneath the sofa where he stashes his larder. He then returns & looks forlorn at the bones that the other dogs have. He appears pathetically sad, as though he's been forgotten. Foster mom knows it's a ploy, that he's a con artist, but she's a sucker and nevertheless gives him a second bone.
Potential adopters should be careful as Harvey is an escape artist & would make a tasty morsel for a coyote; he only weighs 27 pounds; he should never be left alone outdoors, even within a fenced area. Harvey is a quiet dog, unless he sees a squirrel or hears another animal and then he'll bark. He gets along with all other dogs and loves to wrestle but doesn't back down if provoked, regardless of the size of the other dog. He's a tough little dog.
But his general nature is laid back indifference or playfulness. For cats, it's unknown, but most likely he'd just be curious or want to play. At one years old, he needs teething-type toys & bones. Harvey would be great with all children but I recommend they be over 7 years old, only because Harvey has sharp little teeth.
Harvey's still a baby, so sometimes when he's tired, he begs to be held. He likes to be wrapped in a flannel blanket, rocked and talked to in soothing tones. One minute he's macho dog, the next minute he wants cuddling. Harvey loves it when his foster mom comes home from work, opens the door and scoops him up. It's like catching a furry football. He gets so excited when I hold him close and chant, "I've got the pigskin, touchdown, touchdown, we win, hooray, hooray!!" His 4 little feet kick excitably. Harvey is an ideal little dog with a winning personality.
