Update: 1/29: Harry was adopted but returned a few days later for his intense fear of the man in the house. He is going into doggie socialization 'boot camp' and updates will be posted in a few weeks. If interested in Harry, only homes somewhat local to Richmond, ME and with shy/undersocialized/abused dog experience that know how to discourage shy behavior while rewarding brave behavior will be considered..
Update 1/2/10: Harry, a 2 year old chihuahua /shih mix, is doing wonderfully in his new foster home after having arrived frightened of humans and very scared. After one week he is playing, asking for cuddles, giving kisses, and wagging his little tail. Harry weighs 8 pounds and loves to follow his humans around the house. He loves to chill out and take long naps. He is good with cats. He is housebroken. Harry is a real sweetheart and will do great in a home with other animals and no small children.
We were told by the backyard breeder/hoarder that Harry is a 2 yr old chi/shih mix. The vet agrees that he is 2, but we aren't so sure about his breed. He looks like a chi/maltese mix. Either way! Harry is a real doll! He is only about 8 or 9 lbs and this poor guy has been kept in a crate inside what resembled a shed for his whole life. This is from his foster Mom:
"Harry is a sweetheart! He does not know what outside is all about, but he is learning. He loves other animals but is very apprehensive with humans. I am attaching photos that I took quickly a little while ago. Once he is settled in the house, I will get better photos. The doctor down south noted he is 4 years old. The doctor today was shocked...she said his teeth and gums are of a younger dog...more like 2 years old (which is what the breeder said, we agree that he is only 2). He is eating very well. He has attached himself to my other animals and I would HIGHLY recommend that he go into a home with other pets but no young children due to his size and lack of appropriate child socialization. I gave him a bath when I got home and he did not have any issues with it. He seemed to feel better after the bath and wanted to play. He slept in my arms all night and woke up kissing me!! He will make a great companion dog for another dog and family!
