HERE IS WHAT HIS OWNER HAS TO SAY ABOUT HIM. Gus is an AKC registered GWP who was born 3/23/06. We got Gus on 2/20/10. Gus was an owner surrender at the shelter. His previous owners had him since he was 6 weeks old, so I'll include here some of the information they left about Gus at the shelter.
Previous owner's history of Gus:
- - Gus is crate-trained, and when left alone, was either crated indoors, left in the garage or basement, or left outside in a fenced yard
- - He was given up because he is a good dog that deserves more time, attention, and exercise than I can give him
- - He has never growled, snapped, or bitten anyone
- - He will dig or find things to play with if bored, but never damaged furniture or anything major
- - Gus lived with children ages infant 3 years and done well but we are seeking a home with kids 7 and up
- - Per previous owner, He loves to fetch a ball, but could possibly run off if left unattended in an open area. His favorite treat is ice cubes. He walks well on a leash, but favors walking on the RIGHT side of the walker. He loves kids but is nervous about bikes, skateboards, etc.
- - He is very lovable and sweet, craves attention, and wants to please.
Since we've had Gus, we've taken him to our regular vet for a basic check-up. She said everything looks great. He is up-to-date on shots, lab work, fecal sample, and heartworm test (all of which were negative). We have him on Sentinel once per month. We was treated for an ear infection when we brought him home. He was worked up for hypothyroidism due to hair loss, but he does NOT have it.
We have two toddlers, ages 22 months and 3 years, and Gus is GREAT with them.
We also have a male Yellow Lab and Gus gets along well with him, too, after the initial determining of pack order.
My observations of Gus so far:
- He chews up dog toys like there's no tomorrow (even supposed "indestructible" ones)
- He likes to run off when off-leash outside - doesn't go far - stays within sight, but comes back on his own terms
- He listens well, but needs a refresher on basic commands/leash manners. He pulls on the leash, so I am trying to reinforce "right here"
- LOVES, loves, loves playing fetch and swimming!
- Seems to like being brushed
- Does NOT like nails trimmed
- Not mouthy, has not growled, snapped, or otherwise shown any signs of aggression toward any family members
- He was great at the dog park as well
- Eats politely and slowly
- Loves to rest his head on your lap and get his head scratched, but is not pushy about it seems to just love snuggles!
- Great in the car
- He iss BIG! 90 pounds, but not overweight
So why do we want to find a new home for Gus?
Well, I'll admit, I thought everything would work out in the long run with adding a 2nd dog to our home, but it hasn't. The biggest problem is that my mother-in-law watches our kids 2 days per week (and consequently the dogs too), and she can't handle both dogs. 180 pounds of dog is simply too much for her to manage in addition to our kids. Additionally, the added chaos of another dog in our small-ish home seems to be too much for our family at this time. If it was JUST Gus, I'd keep him in a heartbeat. But we have Jack too, who has been with us for 6 years, and 2 is too many right now.
