Meet Gunner! This super handsome pup is a 3.5yr old great pyr/Aussie Shep mix looking for a final home. He was adopted from Brandywine SPCA July 2020 and literally held hands with his new owner the whole ride home. He still likes to hold hands to this day. He is neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated. This boy is very disciplined and receptive to new training and tasks, house trained, leash trained, place trained, and muzzle trained! Gunner is great with other dogs in fact we think he needs another dog around to be his most happy confidant self. Gunner is a total mush who loves to cuddle, go on hikes and long walks with his person.
Why is a fabulous dog like this looking for a new home you may be asking yourself. If you understand guardian breeds it will come as no surprise that Gunner has become protective in his home. He has determined who belongs and now is very resistant to new comers joining the party- which is very problematic in a mixed family home. There have been a few nips that broke skin which have left several family members too scared to visit. Nothing that required medical attention. This family has really tried their best and Gunner has seen multiple trainers and a behaviorist! He was prescribed reconcile and trazadone for anxiety. The Reconcile is helping but the trazadone seemed to create more agitation and was discontinued. Gunner has some general anxiety around loud noises and is reactive to fireworks. This family is continuing to work on training and love Gunner very much but are hoping we can find him a home that will be a better fit for him and antagonize his anxiety less. He’s a very loving and sweet boy with everyone who lives in the home full time and has shown more predictably stable behavior when out of the house. He is muzzle trained for safety but has been a gentleman when put to the test in public. He has not had issues with children but we will be looking for a child free home just because he has nipped when pushed over his threshold. We will be working with this family and continue working on training until his perfect home is found.
Gunner’s ideal home would have a large property or fenced in yard. A doggie best Friend. Mature family that does not entertain a lot of visitors. Adopters who are experienced and familiar with guardian breed behavior and
Willing to continue training. please share to help this family do what is best for the dog they love! Since we know Gunner has some special needs and may require further training his adoption fee is waived and we are just interviewing for best fit!
