My Story

Update 10/21/09 Gizmo, a terrier/chihuahua mix, is doing great. He loves to do outdoor chores. He always stays close by. Boy, does he love to be in a car! He curls up on his blankie and snoozes away. Gizmo has a wonderful personality. He loves to be with his people, but he isn't insistent for undivided attention. He is a mellow, sweet dog. Gizmo is a very happy and contented fellow and his sweet face and comical ears bring us a smile every day.

Gizmo has arrived into foster care and is being fostered in Casco, Maine. We will be accepting applications for this sweet guy. This is what his foster mom has to say about him:

"Gizmo has settled in as if he had always been a part of our life....he is an affectionate, low key boy. He is sleeping on my husband's lap in the recliner as I write this. He went to visit the grandkids with him today while I was at work....everyone had a great time....Gizmo loves to ride anywhere anyone is going.....He has melded into the pack..My big dogs accept the little ones very well...Guess they don't perceive them as a threat. And although Gizmo was a little hesitant at first meeting, and, who wouldn't be with three big doggies in your face????, he seems to be taking everything in stride. ....love the ears!!!!!!! "

No, this is not Yoda! This is Gizmo, also known as Gizzy-Giz or Gizzy, is approximately 10 1/2 years old in these pictures taken June 2009. His owner gave him up after adopting him 10 years ago the DAY BEFORE he was to be euthanized at a kill shelter. Now her life has changed and she has to move due to health issues. Poor Gizmo cannot go with her to a health care facility.

His mom said that she wants Gizmo to have someone who will care for him and give him LOTS of attention and some outdoor exercise. That Gizmo is very quiet and is well behaved indoors. His demeanor is sweet, not aggressive at all, a lap dog, if permitted, but she trained him not to get on sofas or beds. He likes to have a cushy bed where where you are, and his favorite toy is the 'monkey man.' His favorite treats are pizza crust and popcorn. Gizmo enjoys walking with you, with or without a leash, as he will stay with you and responds to hand signals. He scratches at the door or whines when he wants out and returns to the door when he wants back in.

She often shaved him and put a shirt on him. He seems to like that. His preference in humans has been females, as he has been raised around them. However, he does not seem fearful or aggressive towards men at all. Gizmo is not enthusiastic with children but is not aggressive. Gizmo gets along with cats and dogs.

She closes by saying that 'The person who adopts Giz will have an outstanding, loving companion, and it is my deepest wish that he receives nothing less than the best from his new owner/family.

Gizmo went to the vet on August 8, 2009 for his Rabies, a fecal, and the Heartworm/Lyme/Ehrlichia test. He tested negative for everything and is now on HW preventative. Gizmo weighed 23.1 pounds.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $300 for dogs up to 6 months of age, $250 for dogs 7 months-5 years, and $200 for dogs 5 years and older. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip, and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas. All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption. Applications can be found at www.almosthomerescue.net and can be e-mailed attention of Adele at lonepine_ahr@yahoo for this particular dog. Click HEREto visit our site.
