My Story

GILLY! July 23, 2022 at around 1am, I was headed home from work and looked over to see a massive dog making his way up the highway 169 ramp on east 11th street. I had stopped at the red light and proceeded to yell at this dog not to go that way before he stopped and turned around and came barreling at me. I got out of my car to go to the back and find a leash and next thing I know, Gil is in my passengers seat smiling and the light turned green. oops. I got him to my house, and scanned him and was sooooo relieved when he was microchipped! I put Gil in a kennel, and waited until morning to start calling the registered owner. I found out that Gil was turned into Tulsa Animal Welfare several years previously and when his owner came to claim him, he was neutered and microchipped at that time. Unfortunately, the registered owner on the chip claimed to have never owned a dog. We drove to the registered address and many people immediately recognized Gil as a homeless mans dog who had moved out a few weeks prior and left Gil behind. They had so many good things to say about him, but his story broke our hearts. Gil was as loyal as they come and laid outside his dads camper every day and waited for him to come out and they would travel everywhere together. Gil wasn't used to a leash, or lack of freedom and it was clear that he was uncertain why he was left behind but never once did he give anyone a hard time. Gil has been in boarding and in and out of foster homes merely due to the length of time of his stay and we believe because of his size. Gil likes other dogs, but needs proper introduction! He has had many dog friends and very few that he didn't like of all ages, sizes and gender. Gil is happy to just sprawl on the couch and is an overall low energy dog. He is great in the car, and in public places content to lay with his person and wait. We DNA tested Gil earlier this year and he came back as a pit, spaniel, cattle dog. but he very much is mastiff sized (and snores like one too). Gil is pushing 8 years old and really needs a forever home. he is kennel trained but doesn't necessarily need one. He has slight storm anxiety and otherwise 0 behavioral issues. Gil needs a secure fence. he can jump a 4 foot fence but won't once he's comfortable with his family. Gil's foster has had a life change and we need to find him a forever home as soon as possible. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and current on all preventions. previously treated for heartworms. <3 if you'd like to meet Gil, please go to mercysakes2ndchancerescue.com to submit you application.
