My Story

Update 2/19/10 Fritzie, a 15 lb, 5 month old dachshund/spaniel mix, just loves everyone. He gets along great with his canine foster brother and sister and just loves his new kitty friends. He also loves children and adults equally and is a just a joy to have around. He is 100% house trained and crate trained and is now sleeping through the night in his crate. He does let you know when he has to go out and is getting used to the cold weather. Fritzie has some puppy energy but settles down in the house nicely and just loves to cuddle. He loves to go for long walks and will romp through the snow with the kids, but likes to have his coat on if he is out for long. He does not have any aggression with animals, kids, toys or treats and always seems to be happy. He is definitely at that puppy stage where he chews on things he shouldn't, but redirects well with an appropriate chew toy. This is a very low maintenance, sweet bundle of puppy who would be a great addition to any family.

update 2/7/10 Fritzie, a 15 lb, 5 month old Dachshund mix, has arrived at his foster home in Maine and has made himself right at home. Fritzie is a great little guy. He loves playing with toys and he is a good eater. He loves to cuddle and he is a real love-bug. He is really the perfect lap dog. It's much colder in Maine than in Arkansas and Fritzie gets very cold and shivers without a jacket or sweater on. Fritzie is housetrained and crate trained. He doesn't love the crate, but he tolerates it at night. He is definitely a chewer, so he will need to be crated and/or supervised with toys until he grows out of this. He sometimes wakes during the night to go to the bathroom and whines to be let out. Fritzie does fine in the car. He isn't fully leash trained, but he does OK. For a little guy, Fritzie is very dominant, even with the 62 lb resident dog at his foster home. Apart from this he does well with the other dog. Fritzie has not been tested with cats or children.

Fritzie and his brothers were rescued by our partner shelter in Arkansas from some folks who thought it was fine to let their dogs run around in the street, Fritzies sister and mother were both hit and killed by vehicles. The people said Frritzies mother was a Doxie mix.

Fritzie appears to look more like his mother than his other 2 brothers, and at 4-5 months is only 12lbs, He will probably be a smaller sized dog when grown. Frankie loves his brothers and other dogs and is very sweet with people.

All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending.

This dog is Urgent because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $250.00 for altered dogs. $350. for unaltered puppies, with $100 refundable after spay/neuter. All Senior dogs 6 years or older have a reduced adoption fee of $200. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter and transport from Arkansas to Maine. All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption. Applications can be found at www.almosthomerescue.net and can be e-mailed attention of Christine: [email protected] for this particular dog.
