About FLOYD:   Okay, okay ... we didn't name him :)  But one look into those soulful brown eyes and you'll just be dreaming of what you're GOING to name him when he becomes a part of your family!  We found Floyd posted on the "Dogs Deserve Better" site, and we wanted to help.  He was posted as an Alaskan Malamute, but we believe him to be a Malamute/German Shepherd Dog mix.  This is a great combination of breeds, as you can expect the "best of both worlds". We've had great experiences with this mix ourselves, and find many adopters actually SEEKING a Shepherd/Mal mix. This is because the independent spirit and happy, goofy nature of the Malamute are so wonderfully balanced by the loyalty, desire to please and steadfastness of the German Shepherd. And, best of all, both breeds are highly intelligent - so you won't just get a dog with a great personality and a bright, sunny disposition – you will also get a dog with plenty of brain power!

Floyd is barely out of puppyhood at 2-1/2 years old.  His owner says "He is good with children and LOVES them -- the only issue we have is that the smaller ones are easily bowled over by Floyd's youthful energy and enthusiasm.  He weighs about 96 lbs and is too big to play with the little kids.  As we run a daycare, this means that Floyd has to be relegated to his doghouse and his chain during the day, when the little ones are here.  He is EXTREMELY good-natured and intelligent.  We even have 3 cats that he does fine with!"

Our interview with Floyd's mom (who loves him, and just wants a better life for him) revealed that they adopted Floyd (named for Pink Floyd) when he was just a 6 month old pup, and they've had him for about 2 years.  He is healthy and in good physical condition, neutered and has been kept current on heartworm preventative.

Floyd is described as a "talker", who has the Malamute tendency to express his emotions with his "wooing".  He gets to come in the house when the daycare kids go home, and hangs out there all evening and overnight.  He spends the night in the laundry room, though if you invite him into your bedroom (such as when he's scared of a thunderstorm) he's perfectly happy and well-behaved spending the night by your bed.  He has great house manners and is housebroken.  Floyd is a smart boy who has learned to communicate his needs to you in order to maintain that "good dog" status!  When Floyd needs to go outside, he will plant himself squarely in front of you and make eye contact, wagging his tail energetically until he gets your attention.  Once you look at him, he'll run to the door making his need to go outside obvious.

Floyd LOVES to be "loved on" ... his mom said "Floyd will 'maul' you back if you're lovin' on him ... he thinks he's a lap dog!  He loves nothing more than time and attention with his people!  He knows "SIT" and will speak for treats ... and when questioned, his mom reports NO negative behaviors that a potential adopter would need to know about.

Floyd likes the other dogs he has met!  The chain he's been kept on is long, and the neighbor's male Chow regularly comes over to play.  He is gentle with the smaller dog, and they love chasing and wrestling one another.  In addition, Floyd has been FINE with the family cats!  They have 3 cats, one of whom is kind of the "queen", and who doesn't hesitate to show Floyd she is the boss.  He will chase but only in play and not with aggression.  The other two just run and hide.  :)

Floyd's mom says she has never seen even the SLIGHTEST hint of aggression toward any living thing -- be it human, canine or feline.  He's just a big loving happy boy who deserves a home where he can be fully integrated into the "pack", ALL the time, with his vetting kept up to date and all the love his big heart can take.

Updates:   Check back soon or SEND AN EMAIL to request more information and/or an adoption application.

This dog's adoption donation is $225. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain! This dog has had a complete health exam, has already been altered (spayed or neutered), is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.

What to do if you want to adopt this dog: Just SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application! We will review your application to determine if there is a good match between your family and this dog.  We may suggest another if we can offer a better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.

NOTE:   In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's history.  We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective experience.  Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our care is that of "full disclosure".  It is our goal to ensure the adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between the dog and the adopting person or family.  In some instances, because of applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of time.  If we have identified a temperament or health condition while the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the issue or condition prior to adoption.  Northern Lights' screening process is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be contractually responsible for doing so.

NORTHERN LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to foster dogs in need of a second chance.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE BY FOSTERING FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS, EMAIL US FOR INFO AND AN APPLICATION!   For answers to FAQ regarding who we are, as well as our adoption policies and practices, please VISIT OUR PETFINDER HOME PAGE.
