My Story

Fifi was rescued from an Appalachian West Virginia pound, where she was only one of numerous beautiful Beagles, all of whom were scared of people because their former owners probably acquired them to hunt and, therefore, never socialized them with people and other dogs. Fifi's foster mom is not normally a big Beagle fan but fell in love with Fifi's large, beautiful eyes which look like they are "framed" with eyeliner. Her beauty and mature, ladylike demeanor at an estimated age of 3 years won her foster mom's heart and her way off deathrow. This petite little beauty stands only 13 inches tall at the shoulder and measures 17 inches from the base of her neck to the base of her tail. Though she weighed only 24.4. lbs. on 1/21/04 when heartworm tested (negative, praise God), pound visitors paid no attention to Fifi because there were other prettier (if you can believe that), smaller, and younger Beagles in cages right beside her on death row; and they were barking up a storm for attention, whereas Fifi just sat quietly unnoticed in the back of her small cage. Fortunately, her foster mom had her spayed right away because, during surgery, the vet found out that she was in the early stages of pregnancy with 5 or 6 puppies which probably occurred during her tenure as a stray. She is too timid to play with the other dogs or the dog-friendly cats in her foster home; but, at least, she now watches them play sometimes. In just a couple of weeks, Fifi quit looking away when her foster mom talks to her. She now appreciates affection and treats and is going to lose her "slim waistline" if she continues to break into bags of dry catfood left unattended. Fifi has no interest in hunting (other than for catfood); and she is going to need a lot of one-on-one attention in her permanent home, which is not available in her foster home because of the demands of other dogs. Because of this and the fact that the foster dogs have frequent access to 9 securely fenced acres, Fifi's foster mom does not have time to leash train her; but should be an easy task for her permanent human (s). Additional photos of Fifi will be emailed to prospective adopters. Fifi has been heartworm tested, started on heartworm preventative, vaccinated, and spayed.
