Come meet Elvin and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (Aug. 4th) from 12-3 pm at the Petsmart in Alexandria (3351 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22305)! Name: Elvin Best Guess for Breed: Lab mix Best Guess for Age: 2.5 years as of March 2024 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 44 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs and cats! We haven't seen him with kids but he can be tested. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Elvin is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months.We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Elvin is Looking For: This handsome boy arrived in the shelter confused and scared, but has left all those fears back in South Carolina! Elvin is eager to trot through the world with confidence and would love adopters who are extra loving, and patiently ensure he gains new experiences in new environments. Obedience school will help build his braves as well. Most of all, though, Elvin wants to live his life as a well-loved dog and know who his human family is. In exchange, he promises adoring gazes, tail wags, and unwavering loyalty for all his days. He is a big hit at adoption events, eagerly sitting in front of anyone with a treat and putting his paw in the air saying 'I am cute and talented now feed me please!' What do you say? Is this cutie the one you can see by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: Elvin such a delight!! He is a happy, go lucky guy who is super friendly with other dogs and loves to play! He's been very easygoing with us -- I take him on 2-3 walks a day and he's good at entertaining himself with toys when he has spurts of energy. He is really smart and eager to please, plus he is food motivated. Elvin's ears are so adorable and he's so soft, and he has the cutest puppy looking eyes melt your heart. Elvin is working on leash skills and not being mouthy when excited, but is easily redirectable. He's been sleeping well in his crate and he's been very respectful of our resident dog, who can be grumpy. He's such a fan favorite at events and loves to sit and put his paw in the air asking for a treat. He loves to be around his people and deserves the world - he might have had the easiest start to life, but he holds no grudges and loves everyone and everything! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training.
