Elliot

Elliot is a stunningly handsome Royal Standard Poodle that weighs 58#. He is 3 yr. old (born 8/27/2021), and was surrendered to our program by a breeder. Having lived in a kennel, he is shy around new people, and he must have a female as his primary caregiver in his new home– now that he knows the male in his foster home, he will go over to him when called to get pets and scritches. But with his foster mom he is an absolute “Velcro” dog. Elliot follows her everywhere, and likes to be touching the side of her leg when they walk together; when she sits down, Elliot will gently put his paw in her lap. He doesn’t really get underfoot, but his adopter must be steady on their feet because he will sometimes stop in front of you and not move. Doesn’t jump on people. Elliot is good with the grandchildren that visit, and we expect he would be good with respectful kids 10 yr and up. BUT.....Elliot is smart, and has started opening the latch to the gate with his nose, so you’ll need to put a little snap hook or clip to keep it locked. We think the children in his new home should be mature, respectful 12 yr and up (so they remember to lock the gate if they go through). No cat experience. He has always lived with other dogs, and doesn’t like to be alone – another playful dog and a secure fenced (at least 5 ft. high) yard are required for adoption. He loves time outside, running and chasing other dogs; indoors he likes to chew on approved hard treats, but isn’t into toys. Well behaved in the house. Elliot is good on leash, sits for a treat, knows his name and once he bonds with you will come when called. Barks at people that pass by the yard, but is quiet in the house. Rides well in the car. During the day, he is let outside every few hours, and can hold it for up to 5 hrs. if you leave. Still need to watch him to be sure he gets his business done – if he doesn’t, he needs to go out a second time alone. He’s not crated at night – sleeps in the family room with the other dogs. Coming from a breeding kennel, he wasn’t housebroken when we got him, but he's making great progress - it is best if his person is home much of the time (work from home or perhaps work half-days outside of the home) to get him out at the needed frequency. He just needs a little more work to be housebroken for 8 hrs. Elliot is a very affectionate dog that likes to be with his person as much as possible, and he likes attention from them. Elliot is neutered, and in March of this year he had a dental cleaning. Current on distemper, rabies and bordetella vaccinations, and his heartworm test and tick profiles are all negative. He will need grooming 4-5 times/yr. – an ongoing expense to consider. His microchip is registered to Second Chance. Adoption fee is $500.
