About EDISON:
This absolutely GORGEOUS Malamute boy is what's known as a "wooly", due to his
extra-long, fluffy coat. He came to us from a NE Ohio shelter, where he
would have met a terrible fate in a gas chamber. Fortunately one of our
new adopters found out about him and offered to make room for a foster!
Edison is about 85 pounds and is just a baby at approximately 18 months of age.
He has amazing amber eyes, and the "baby face" one often sees with woolies.
We hope to have more info as we get to know him.
can keep him as long as
you need me to. I am picking him up tomorrow. They havent seen any signs of
illness or seizures at th dog pound. They think it might of been just an excuse
to get rid of him. The owner said he was 18 months. Im going tonight to spend
some time with him. Thanks Kraig 85 pounds
Edison's
Foster Dad Says:
This poor guy looks like he was chained to a
dog house and forgotten about. His undercoat is so matted that we aren't sure a
groomer can help without just ridding him of most of it. I can't even
imagine how fantastic he will look when his coat is clean and healthy and
fluffy!
What a great save he was!
He's a wonderful boy. I feel like he's in constant pain
because of his fur being so tightly matted to his skin, but it doesn't hurt his
wonderful disposition even one little bit. He's a
gentle giant with
a laid-back personality. I don't
think he had much interaction with other dogs, but he's learning to play with my 14 week old
(male) pup. He's very tolerant of all the play
biting my pup inflicts on him. He HAS made it clear to my other Malamute (also a
male) that he is alpha. But because my boy isn't alpha, that haven't had any serious conflicts. He is excellent on a
leash, staying right on your knee, and even stopping and starting with you.
Edison's just a total sweetheart, and I'm so glad we were able to take him in!
Somebody's going to fall for him, and fall hard! :)
Update: Well, we had to do it --
Edison is shown with his new "Poodle Cut". This is the last thing we want
to do to a dog, but Edison was so badly matted that he had to be taken to a vet
and put under to tackle his awful coat and bring him some comfort at long last.
We were horrified to see what lay beneath all those matts -- and it's shown in
one of his photos, above. His poor skin was covered with literally
hundreds of small sores/ulcerations and a couple of large ones. With
loving care, though he is comfortable and on the mend!
His foster dad
says: "He's getting happier by the
minute. It's amazing how playful he has become! He's actually going to be
smiling after we get him cleaned up. When I first brought him home, he
shied away from being touched, but now he's actually started to come up and
nuzzle me for attention. Even the groomer, who realized after working on
him for a couple of hours before realizing he needed to be put under to endure
what needed to be done said he was a sweet and gentle boy.
Update #2: His foster dad continues:
"Edison's skin condition is completely healed up! I'm also happy to report
that he is growing by leaps and bounds emotionally. He is now initiating
playtime with my 15 week old pup, though (also good) he really shows no interest
in other dog when I'm walking him. He has accepted his position as "beta male"
to my "alpha", Finn, a 100 pound Malamute. Edison's coat is starting to come in
but it will be a little while before he starts to look like himself again.
The bright side is he's really clean and I can tell he's comfortable.
Edison does get lonely and bored during the day, and really needs someone or
something (such as another dog) to keep him company. He loves to play and
does his best with someone (human or dog) go keep him company. He's still
extremely mellow and is still learning to trust, though he seems to be more
trusting of women then men. That leads me to think that his previous owner was
an abusive male, though he's done fine with me given just love and consistency
and patience.

NOTE:
In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from
shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's
history. We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age
estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective
experience. Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our
care is that of "full disclosure". It is our goal to ensure the
adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between
the dog and the adopting person or family. In some instances, because of
applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of
time. If we have identified a temperament or health condition while
the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to
adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the
issue or condition prior to adoption. Northern Lights' screening process
is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to
treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be
contractually responsible for doing so.
NORTHERN
LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to
foster dogs in need of a second chance.
