My Story

Dutchess has found her forever home in Bakersfield, CA with her new K-9 BIGGER sister Devyn (also a great dane)!

UPDATE (POST SURGERY) 4/26- Dutchess's surgery was a HUGE success. The bone had been digging into her pelvic nerve and giving her constant pain and irritation up until the surgery (according to the doctor)- he said it was "a mess" in there, but she is good as new now. She should be much more comfortable with that big piece removed and she is walking almost completely normal now (see video). She is now available for adoption and ready to go to her forever home!! :)

UPDATE 4/15- Dutchess's surgery has been scheduled for April 22nd and once she has healed, she will be available for adoption!

UPDATE! 2/11- The specialist saw Dutchess and her xrays today, and was so SHOCKED by the films that he offered to do the surgery at half the cost he would normally charge just to get her in and see the problem from the inside sooner. He said that she has got to be very uncomfortable with the bone sitting in that position and the sooner we can raise the $2500, the better for Dutchess. Please read below to see how you can help! THANK YOU!

Dutchess is a gorgeous and sweet 2 year old Great Dane girl who was rescued VERY sick from the animal shelter. Not only was she emaciated when we got her, but on top of that, she was sick with a very bad upper respiratory infection and refused to eat for over 10 days! After a heavy dose of antibiotics, we cleared up the infection and she is starting to put on weight. She is a SUPERB dog. The best temperament a dog could have. Gentle, but playful, good with dogs her size all the way down to her little buddy, a 9lb Min Pin... how this girl ended up at the shelter is sickening... Dutchess has a SEVERELY broken femur that has healed so badly, we are seeking specialist's advice as to how to fix it. And despite knowing many commands such as "sit", "shake", "other paw", "down", someone dumped her at the shelter.. probably because of her hip. She definitely has been bred at least once, and it just devastates us that such a wonderful creature would end up in the state she was when she came into our program. Dutchess is currently in foster care (did I mention she was house broken and uses the dog door!??!) until her surgery funds have been raised and we can give this girl a second chance at a normal life. Vets are dumbfounded at the xrays! The femur snapped in half, but also split in half on the top break, so the bone has healed in a "wishbone" formation and then fused with the bottom half. Her leg currently sits about 2 inches off of normal. If you would like to sponsor Dutchess and/or make a donation toward her medical bills, please click on the link below.... the bills are currently at $500 and QUICKLY climbing (we will know more after 2/10 when she is seen by the specialist). ANY AMOUNT HELPS!! Once we have raised the funds, and surgery is done, she will become available for adoption. Please help this wonderful angel...
As of 3/15- ($0 to go): THANK YOU- Erin M, Ruth R, SHELLY C, JUNE P, Paula F, Elizabeth M, THERESA J, Deborah R, Amanda V, Rod P, ELIZABETH A, Erika, S!
