My Story

Duke is 20 months old in June 2008 and is a small Norwegian elkhound, weighing about 45 pounds. He is neutered, up-to-date with shots and microchipped. He spent most of his life tied up in a back yard, so he hasn’t had a lot of experiences or leash-training. He is housebroken, however, and rides well in a vehicle. Duke knows “sit” and will walk nicely with minimal correction. Duke was teased by adolescent girls while he was staked out, so they might not make a good match with him, but he has been with smaller children and adults. Due to the elkhound’s heavy, double coat, he must be in air conditioning during periods of heat (low 80s and hotter), particularly when humidity is high. We know Duke will go after cats, but he has been with some other dogs without a problem. To visit with Duke, please join us at our off-site adoptions at PetCo, 2721 S. Veterans Parkway, Springfield, Ill., on the first and fourth Sunday of each month or the second and third Sundays at Springfield’s PetsMart on Veterans Parkway. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. If that doesn't match your schedule, please call Illinois Humane at (217) 698-3804 to arrange for a visit with Duke. He is waiting to meet you. Duke will also be at The Gables Marketplace on June 19, 20 and 21. ILLINOIS HUMANE . . . CARING PEOPLE . . . CARING FOR ANIMALS.
