Special Adoption Considerations: Duke is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months.We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! He's looking forward to his new chapter, eagerly awaiting all the play time (that JRT in him means he's likely to have plenty of awesome dog energy!) he will get with his new humans, romps in the park, and all the adventures they can dream up. He's out of the puppy yips and as a wise, experienced dog, knows what's most important in life: Being safe and loved and under his own roof, and that's right at the top of his wish list.
