My Story

Daisy and Donald Duck were both found by police tied to a random porch. The owner was no where in sight, and sadly it was noticed that Daisy was lactating but no puppies were nearby. Officers searched for puppies but none were found :( Daisy and DD are now both looking for a rescue partner to get them from ACCT Philly. They are both super fearful in the shelter but open up with time and are open to handling. They are both much more confident around another dog! Please check out our sweet friends today! He prefers when I stand low to the ground or sit when he's coming out of the kennel. He's really scared walking out of the kennels, both days he needed a helper dog and walked out much easier when another dog was walking in front of him. He met multiple dogs outside today and did very well, he is so much more confident around another dog! He did the photoshoot with us and handled it well. Again, we needed a helper dog to get him back inside. He didn't want to get in his kennel but when I climbed in and dropped some treats, he came in no problem. Per Volunteer 7/20/24: Was terrified of leashing and cowered to the ground at first when I tried leashing. He was very treat motivated so I sat there for a few minutes with him feeding him treats. I then got in to leash him which he still dodged but he was definitely more comfortable. I sat there feeding him with the leash on for a while until he looked comfortable and he slowly stepped out of the kennel. Seemed most comfortable to come out when I was low to the ground. We ran into the dog he came in with, Daisy, who was out with another volunteer. He warmed up when he saw her but wasn't overly excited. He came out to a play yard with me and Daisy followed. They were playful with each other and he was much more loose with her. He took pets from both volunteers and they were very sweet. Pretty chill, Donald was more handler focused than Daisy who seemed overwhelmed. Per Staff 7/19/24: Brought Daisy out to see if either would open up more with their friend. They didn't recognize each other and were hesitant at first, but once they got close enough to sniff Donald opened up a lot! His body got looser and he began wagging, and even did a nice shake off! Daisy was still tense and had a tucked tail, but she clung to Donald's side and didn't want to move away from him at all. At one point she gave Donald a bunch of face kisses! They both approached staff member voluntarily together and were more open to handling together. It seems like they both gain confidence when together! Per Staff 7/19/24: BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: KNOWN HISTORY: -Police pick up KENNEL PRESENTATION: -Donald was on the back half on his kennel when I approached. He watched me with wide, scared eyes, and began alert barking at me. I lowered the divider and went around. Once on the other side Donald did some low growls and hid his face in the back corner of the kennel. He did not react at all as I leashed him, just trembled and hid his face. Once leashed he did not want to exit kennel. I sat with him and tried treats and baby voice to coax him, but he wasn't moving. I dragged his bed he was laying on to the door, and he climbed out of kennel slowly on his own. LEASH SKILLS: Very scared on leash, kept freezing and trembling. ACA came by and offered help getting him into the eval room. Donald allowed the ACA to pick him up without issue. HANDLING: -Once in the room I gave DOnald some space to relax. He slowly sniffed around the room, tentatively exploring. He approached me on his own and gave me some hesitant sniffs, but did not take any treats or cheese I offered. I get him a couple pets but he tensed up and his eyes got hard. However, Donald stayed near me and sat by my feet. With a little more time he allowed more touch and handling. He still flinched a bit when initially touched, but would stay still and tolerate the touch. He allowed me to check his ears and pet down his entire body gently. At one point he rested his chin on my knee and looked up with sad, scared eyes. He allowed some head pets but got overwhelmed and looked away. Towards the end Donald began trying to hide underneath my legs and the chair I was sitting on. Poor Donald is just so scared, but he's still tolerant.
