9-7-09, ADOPTED, thank you Erin of Plummer, ID! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~UPDATE 8-19-09 Ummmm, not at all afraid of my nice little kid, loved her actually, and slept in her room, checking on her thru the night! NICE dog!!! About 50#'s underweight for his height. Former owners had been down on their luck for the last several years and he's been surviving on minimal table scraps and cheap, crappy kibble from Walmart. He suffered very hot, yeasty infected ears, lips and foot pads due to his poor diet. He's already showing improvement there with the meds, ointments and good food. I've started him on Eagle Pack Large/Giant Adult, and he'll need to stay on that, or some other super premium similar in formulation, for the rest of his life. Be sure you go to their website at www.eaglepack.com to check if there is a retailer near you.****************************************In 8-16-09. Luke is an owner surrender due to foreclosure on their home. He is a purebred Dane with AKC papers. He is a merle. He was bred and sold by Kevin & Laura Michelizzi of Echo Valley Great Danes, in Evans, WA. All attempts to reach them have failed, as phone #'s and email I have are out of service. This dog is BIG... Flat big. I don't pretend to be a Grt. Dn expert, so I'll just tell you what I know... He is very scared, frightened of just about anything. When I went to pick him up from his former owners, you could see the love and devotion he had for them in his face and body movements. He did NOT want to come with me, but readily loaded in the backseat of my truck when his young owner asked him to. He rode VERY nicely, excellent manners. He also stayed in the truck and didn't make a sound while I ran into the convience store for some milk. We got home and he was nervous to get out, but a slight tug of the leash and out he came into the waiting "pack" at my farm. There was no growling, no posturing, no aggression from him at all. He greeted each dog properly, but with no euthusiam. He came with me on leash to do farm chores and was nervous, but not aggressive or overly excited about any farm animals. He did act, and still does, as if he'd bolt if I take him off leash, and I don't trust him not to jump my 5' perimeter fence, just yet..... He came from a home where they had several horses and cats. It was a 5 acre parcel, with 4' high field fences. He'd never left their property unattented. We finished up chores and he came inside with me. He did fine with the hardwood floors, not scared at all. He did fine meeting my hubby, not interested, but not overyl scared. He was perfect with the house cats and little dogs, completely ignored them. He slept all night quietly on a dog bed on the floor next to my bed. Not a peep out of him. I am told he's not been properly exposed to little kids and is afraid of them. Runs the other direction when they approach. His obedience skills are superb... Sit, stay, down, and shake on command with no hesitation. He appears to be totally housebroken. No chewing, no blind shredding, no accidents. He is tall enough to be able to walk up to a window and set his muzzle on the sill and look out. He's amazing. He is scared, and timid, but loving and kind.. I am told he's afraid of the dark, has never ridden in the open back of a pickup (thank God) and is afraid of the dark (won't go outside after dark). It's going to take him some time to adjust to his new home. And may be doubly hard, or maybe easier, depending on how long it takes him to adjust here, so patience and understanding will be key. I am looking for a Dane experienced owner, who understands this breed inside and out. His socially lacking background is going to take a little effort to get over, but I really think he's worth it. He is 3 yrs old and weighs in at a fit (not an ounce of fat on him) #137.
