My Story

COOKIE ADOPTED!: 8/3/2007
Last evening I took Cookie to meet her new Mom and Dad. Cookie ran around the back yard sniffing and wagging her tail in approval.
When we went inside Cookie ran around the room and checked everything out including a 1/2 life size stuffed Rottie that was behind her new Mom's chair. Cookie gave the "Rottie" a shake on the neck just to let it know she was going to be the alpha around here now.
Her new Mom gave Cookie a stuffed toy with hard rope arms. Cookie knew what must be done to make this a really great toy. She immediately started biting it to make it squeak and then Cookie pulled the cloth buttons off and began opening the front seam to allow the pulling out the stuffing! This was in deed a wonderful new toy that just needed a bit of personal attention to make it even better!

Cookie knew she that her new folks needed the special love that she has the gift to give. She started with Dad and got up in his lap and washed his face and neck with her wonderful kisses. Then she got down ran around the room to check a few more things out and went to Mom and showered her with Cookie kisses. Cookie knew she was home with her new Mom and Dad and wanted to start right away letting them know all was going to be fine now that she was there to take cake of them!
When Dad took her out twice to make sure that there were no squirrels that they needed to be defended against, she went potty like a good girl both times.
Cookie rode with Mom to show me the way to the main road.

We could not be happier for this very intelligent sweet happy spirited little Welsh Terrier who started life out as a "Puppy Mill" breeder, was in grave danger when her uterus that came apart at her spay surgery and then the months of fighting her way back to health after a game that went bad which resulted in a dog pack attack.

Cookie may have scars on her body.....but her spirit was never injured! We thank God for being able to have such a wonderful little dog in our lives for these last months!

Cookie will be working with Mom teaching kids to love and respect dogs. I can not think of any dog better than Cookie as an ambassador for showing the ability of a dog to overcome difficulty and still be able to share the wonderful sweet unconditional love that only a dog has to give!

Cookie, have a wonderful life with your Mom and Dad, you certainly deserve your "lot" to have fallen in pleasant places! We also know Mom and Dad are now in the "Best of Paws"!

COOKIE'S STORY:
Cookie is a beautiful Welsh Terrier female who was rescued from the life of a "Puppy Mill" breeder.
Cookie has a calm very sweet gentle nature. She is a wonderfully social happy girl. Cookie gets alone well with all her foster brothers and sisters.
Cookie loves to ride in the car, walks well on lead and wants only to give love to her people.
Cookie is now loving being an inside dog. Cookie will be a wonderful inside companion. She knows you do not "go potty" in the house, though by her reactions to the sights and sounds of the house....Cookie must not been in a house before. This is one extra special little girl!

Because of the strong prey drive of the Welsh Terrier breed, Cookie will not be placed in a home with cats, small dogs, birds or other small furry creatures.
Cookie will not be placed in a home with children under 10 years of age.

Cookie will only be adopted as a valued inside family member in her new family.

UPDATE #1: 5/8/2007
On Sunday morning Cookie was playing with her best friend. For some reason the game went bad and they fought. Cookie was severely injured.
Cookie was taken to a local Emergency Vet Clinic ,she was in shock and unstable. Cookie stayed at the ER Clinic until Monday morning when I took her to our vet. Cookie was still unstable and her wounds could not be treated until Cookie was able to tolerate the needed surgery.
Today, Tuesday 5/8/07, our vet spent 6 hours working on Cookie. She tolerated the first 2 hours of cleaning and shaving her wounds this morning and then he had her rest for several hours. This afternoon around 4 PM began the surgery that took 4 hours to repair Cookie's wounds.
Cookie lived through the surgery and now we have to see what tomorrow brings. She continues on IV Fluids, IV and IM Antibiotics and of course Pain Medication.
Cookie is one tough little girl and I believe she will make it through this awful time. We do not know how long her recovery will be or what if any loss of function Cookie may have sustained.
Cookie's medical expenses are mounting up quickly and are going to be very high. Cookie is such a special little girl that we just had to do all that is possible to save her!
Should God lay on your heart to donate to help with Cookie's medical care it will be greatly appreciated.
I will be posting frequent updates on Cookie's condition and progress.

UPDATE #2: 5/9/07
This morning Cookie's vet called (on his day off) to say Cookie did live through the night and was more alert. Cookie had been on IV Fluids through the night and when he went in to check on her found that Cookie, even with an E-Collar on had chewed through the IV tubing. I laughed and said, "Thank God, Cookie is still in there"! and he replied, "Yes, Cookie is still in there." He is planning to check in on Cookie several times today.
Cookie is now stable enough not to need the IV restarted and her Antibiotics have been changed to IM and Oral doses with her pain med being given IM.
Cookie was alert and able to stand up on her own to look at the man who has helped to save her life.
This morning Cookie's "Doc" said the surgery had lasted 4 and 1/2 hours and that he has used over 15 packs of suture materials to close Cookie's wounds.
"Doc's" commit was, "Cookie looks like a Road Map" with all of her suture lines.
Thank God for a vet who does not consider a rescue dog as a 2nd class patient! "Doc" is giving Cookie carefully planned care day by day.
We are hopeful that Cookie may be able to come home by the weekend to continue her recovery and rehabilitation.

UPDATE #3: 5/18/2007
A battered and torn Cookie was able to come home Tuesday on 3 different antibiotics each given twice a day. Cookie will be going to see "Doc" every other day for dressing changes.
Weeks if not months of recovery are ahead for Cookie. There is still a big question about one of Cookie's back legs. She may be facing either skin graphs to the leg or even possible amputation. Her wounds go far beyond the sutures all over her body.

At home, Cookie is enjoying being able to look outside from the safety of the sliding glass door in her special room with her mama. Cookie is glad to feel the cool grass under her paws and warm sun on her body and her little nose is working overtime to take in all the new smells!
She especially enjoys snuggling on the couch and the great food that will help her body heal.
Cookie is giving and receiving lots of love and kisses. Her little tail is frequently wagging and the smile on her face peaking out from her E-Collar lets us know that though her body may be broken her wonderful spirit is whole! Cookie is fighting to regain her health.

Next Tuesday, Cookie will go in to have her stitches removed. She will need to be sedated to spare her the pain of having so many sutures removed. Cookie is literally covered with sutures from head to toe!
Cookie's leg will be re-evaluated again on Tuesday to see what will be the best plan for treatment.

UPDATE #4: 6/20/07
We are especially glad to report that Cookie's leg is making a remarkable recovery!
There are still every other day dressing changes done by Cookie's foster mom, Ruth and the weekly visits to see "Doc".
"Doc" is very pleased at how well Cookie is healing now with lots of loving care and good nutrition.
We are all pleased that Cookie"s leg is healing so well!

UPDATE #5: 7/1/2007
Cookie is doing so well that she is now able to go without the dressing on her Right leg. Cookie is still sporting her E-Collar to allow her wounded leg to heal. It is amazing that Cookie has healed enough now that she has no more dressings! Now her leg can continue to heal with the aid of sunshine and fresh air along with monitored periods of rest and exercise.

UPDATE #6: 7/24/2007
Cookie's E-Collar was taken off 2 almost weeks ago! And "Doc" says all Cookie needs now is to regain her strength and she will be ready to take her place in "her" family.
Cookie's leg continues to grow stronger and the leg muscles are developing more again as she runs and plays with her gentle giant GSD friend. Judah watches out for Cookie and "herds" her into the house when she doesn't come right in the house when called. Cookie will just run right under Judah when they are outside.
Cookie runs with a hop on both back legs and she can move in a hurry now!
Cookie is eating well and is now not only a happy girl, but she is also a healthy girl again!

I am delighted to say that Cookie is now ready to be adopted!
It is time for this one time Puppy Mill Mom to be someone's special "baby". I have not met a more loving dog nor a dog with a stronger will to live and the ability to overcome the damage of severe injury with a constant sparkle in her eye.
Cookie is one of the few most exceptional dogs I have ever know!
With the proper training, Cookie would make a Wonderful Therapy Dog. She has a smile and kisses for everyone and she wants to snuggle close so she can give you her special loving attention. Cookie could also be a great Therapy Dog because she has endured pain and suffering and overcome much! Many adults and children would be able to identify with this spunky yet very gentle little Welsh Terrier girl!

Cookie's body has been battered and beaten down, however as has been said, "She is 'One Tough Cookie'." Cookie's zest for life and terrier fighting spirit have brought her this far with her amazing recovery.
Thanks to God's grace and the medical skills of "Doc" who would not give up even when Cookie's leg was so damaged that the bone was exposed along most of her Right leg. Cookie's leg will not be lost and she is making remarkable strides in her healing process!

It is amazing that through this whole ordeal Cookie has maintained her sweet loving dynamic personality!

As "Doc" said at the time of the surgery to close her many wounds, "Cookie looks like a Road Map" with all of her suture lines. With each healed suture line there is a scar. Cookie has scars all over her head, body and legs. Many of these scars will be covered as her hair grows out.
The one most notable change in Cookie's appearance will be her Left ear that has a large wedge shaped piece missing just behind where her ears naturally tip forward. This is not as noticeable from the front but is easily seen from the side and looking down on her head from above.

As soon as Cookie can be without her E-Collar long enough to have pictures made there will be new pictures posted.

Cookie will need to be adopted by someone who is willing to accept the scars that may still show and love the "rag tag" piece missing from her ear.
Her new parent will need to understand that this is all part of this extra special little Welsh Terrier girl who has overcome life as a Puppy Mill mom and has fought her way back to health from wounds that would have killed a lesser dog!

As stated before:
Because of the strong prey drive of the Welsh Terrier breed, Cookie will not be placed in a home with cats, small dogs, birds or other small furry creatures.
Cookie will not be placed in a home with children under 10 years of age.

Cookie will only be adopted as a valued inside family member in her new family.
