My Story

Update from Concetta's foster mom!!! 8/19/07:We've had Concetta almost three weeks and thoroughly enjoy her. We call her Sophie, though--that started because she likes to lie on the sofa and look out the window. She's still a puppy, eight months now. Her birthdate on her papers is January 1st. She's a little timid with my big boys (they are 18 and 17) but comfortable with my 15 and 13 year old. She is well-behaved in the house, though she will chew socks and paper if they're lying around. She is great on the leash, playful at first, holding part of it in her mouth and dancing around, but she settles quickly and doesn't pull. She is very good off leash on the trails, running in big circles and coming back on her own to check in. She's not much of a fetcher, though she likes to chew bouncy balls and she might go after a stick, but not bring it back.

She considers herself a lapdog, and we do let her on the furniture. She goes into a crate but will whine to get out; we don't crate her often. She is housebroken, as long as she gets to go out several times a day. We walk/run her twice during the day for a couple miles each time, and walk around the block last thing at night. I work at home, so she spends a lot of time with me and I take her out often. She's a dog who needs to be busy, and needs regular exercise.

We have three cats and two dogs, and she does well with everyone. The other dogs help her learn; she comes and sits when they do, but she also responds on her own. She's quite good at come and very good at sit. She is not possessive of food or treats; you can take food out of her bowl when she's eating. She's pretty bouncy but gentle with kids. In fact, she keeps a timid distance from our preschool neighbors. She's very dark brown, almost black, with some lighter brown on her legs and

She is a great dog and wll make someone a wonderful pet!!!!! 7/29/07: Concetta is in foster care in Maine. Please stay tuned for updates.

My name is Concetta. I am a lab/heeler mix, I weigh 31 pounds and I am about 6 months old. I have a very sweet temperent and just a lovable dog. I don't mind the other dogs either. I can just about play with anyone. I am heartworm free (hooray!) and I have had all my up to date shots, along with a heartworm preventive pill this month. I would really like a big back yard to play in, won't you open your home to me?

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $250.00 for altered dogs. $350. for unaltered puppies, with $100 refundable after spay/neuter. All Senior dogs 6 years or older have a reduced adoption fee of $200. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas. All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption.
