My Story

Cocoa is a brown, 4 yr old, miniature poodle who is looking for a new forever home. Do you have a heart for a fellow who LOVES to take car rides, LOVES to go for walks, LOVES to sit on a warm lap and will love you unconditionally and adoringly? Please meet ‘COCOA’. Cocoa arrived in foster care in early December 2008. He is one of the lucky ones to overcome his previous puppy mill existence. This lively fellow has blended beautifully with our foster family. He has passed his temperament testing and vet checks with flying colors! He has bonded with men, women, small children, cats, and other poodles! Cocoa has been neutered, given all shots, has a rabies cert. and had his teeth cleaned. He is truly a sweet social little boy who deserves a wonderful new home. If you would like to learn more about Cocoa, please call Fran at 301-663-4693 between noon and 9pm, or email her at [email protected] , or fill out an application below. We require a fenced yard if there are kids under the age of 12 in the home.

Adopting a dog that has been moved from a home to a shelter and then to a rescue is not for everyone. It takes time and patience to make that dog feel at home in his new environment. It takes at least 1 week and usually up to a month for a dog to acclimate to your schedule and home. An animal shelter is the most stressful place for a dog to be, with other dogs barking and not knowing what is happening around them. Some dogs come to their new home scared and timid. They will sometimes take several days before they start eating and have anything to do with the new adopters.

It's not easy rescuing a dog. It takes patience and time and LOVE. These dogs need love and understanding, not another rejection.
