Checkie

Checkie is approximately 1 1/2 - 2 yrs old in these pictures taken December 8, 2007. He is a very very sweet, loveable, smart, and friendly boy. Checkie gets along great with all of the dogs he has been with and enjoys running the big yard. Although he hasn't been introduced to children, we do believe that he would be fine with older children. With younger children we are afraid he would knock them over.

Checkie was found in March of this year by one of our volunteers who was driving in Missouri. Checkie was walking on the side of the very busy highway in the rain when she went through to pick up her nieces and nephew from school. She couldn't stop and pick him up because she didn't know how he would do with children and she didn't have a big enough crate with her. The volunteer made a mental note to make sure to check for the dog on her way back to Arkansas. On her way back she just barely caught sight of him lying in a pile of gravel the same color as he was.

She stopped the car and cautiously got out thinking 'Oh God...he's dead!' When he lifted his head, she was so relieved. Checkie (formerly called Freeway by the volunteer who rescued him) let the volunteer put a leash on him and then she helped him in the car. He was so tired and had sore feet (we figure he must have walked miles), but he was so happy and licked the volunteer almost all the way back to Centerton, AR (30 - 40 minutes).

We soon found an adopter for Checkie and he loved it in his new home. However, they were having trouble keeping him from running off a few times and did not want to make changes so we took him back this December.
