Calypso came to us from Louisiana, a victim of Hurricane Katrina. He was one of many dogs rescued by People for Animals volunteers, who brought Calypso and many more animals (including Saturn, who is also available for adoption) back to safety in New Jersey. Although this adorable boy was held safely in a kennel for two months in the hopes that his family would find him, they never came.
Calypso now needs to find a new, permanent home. He is about 2 years old, approximately 50 lbs., and has medium length, soft gorgeous fur. Calypso is a great mix of what we think is a belgian shepherd/collie with Newfoundland dog fur. He apparently did not receive much basic obedience training in his previous home, so we are working with him on these things. He already knows "sit", "don't touch" and he is doing very well walking on a leash. He is a quick learner, and very eager to please! He is very energetic and still shows some puppy-like "mouthiness", but soon he will learn appropriate manners and understand the correct way to play. Calypso is very, very affectionate!
Calypso visited the off-leash dog park this weekend, and to our great surprise it appears he is a "Frisbee Dog"!! Someone must have spent some time teaching him to play frisbee, because he was a real hit at the park! He played wonderfully with all the dogs, and loved being petted by everyone, but when someone took out a frisbee, he was off and running like a gazelle. It seemed like he could have played forever, but he wore us out after two hours.
Calypso is good with other dogs, fine with cats, up to date on all his shots, neutered, and heartworm negative. He is also housebroken. We are looking for a family with adults or teenagers only (no small children).
