My Story
THIS DOG IS NOT AT THE LAWRENCE COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY SHELTER. HE IS RESIDING WITH ONE OF THE SHELTER FOSTER HOMES.
Buzz and his gal pal Heidi (a pregnant little Beagle/Lab) were turned into the Louisa KY shelter in early June by an elderly gentleman who had been "taking care of" this homeless canine couple. Because of a serious illness, this gentleman could no longer feed and shelter this boy and girl. And, as with most well-intentioned people, especially in the Appalachian region, the man did not take either of them to a vet to be tested for fatal heartworms; vaccinated against deadly diseases; spayed/neutered to prevent homeless offspring and cancer, etc., associated with not being sterilized. So, on 6/25/04 in the stark shelter environment, Heidi gave birth to 8 puppies very obviously fathered by good ole Buzz. Also, Buzz was suffering from infection as a result of having been shot in the shoulder by some jerk wielding a bebe gun. When he was neutered 7/7/04, Buzz weighed only 26.2 lbs., but, by 7/16/04, he had gotten up to a more healthy 27.6 lbs. between the availability of plenty of nutritional food and being treated with antibiotics to eliminate his infection. Xray revealed that one bebe is lodged between his front leg and shoulder, but it is standard practice not to probe and remove bebes. Once the infection is gone, the only problem it is like to give Buzz is in passing through airport security detectors. Though Buzz has a face that resembles an old man, the vet estimates him to be only 1-1.5 years of age. Fully grown, Buzz stands only 17.5" tall at the top of his shoulders and measures the same 17.5" from the base of his neck to the base of his long tail. This compact little "designer dawg" has the cutest expressions from cocking his head in inquisitiveness to making his mouth lop-sided for the same reason. Though poor Heidi is still lingering at the shelter nursing her pups, Buzz landed a cushy foster home slot where he gets along just fine with the 9 cats in residence and the many dogs ranging from 5-85 lbs. After spending a month and a half caged in the shelter, he was a little hyperactive. However, after only a few days uncaged in his foster home, he calmed right down. He not only would make someone a fabulous companion but, with his Beagle ears, Boxer stature, and small size, he would be a great conversation starter in more ways than one. Buzz is very vocal about talking to his people and his 4-legged "siblings", probably because of his Beagle heritage. He likes sitting on furniture rather than lying on the floor and might be a little too much of a couch potato to be an active playmate for young children. Though he has fathered a huge litter, he is still a baby himself. Just give him a squeak toy and you will see!! He loves to play fetch and watch out when there is a water hose around! Buzz loves to still the water hose and spray you, himself and anyone and anything that crosses his path! This boy is quite the little clown. He also loves to ride in the car and will ride forever if allowed to do so. Buzz is a very social, affectionate, and gentle boy and would make a fabulous addition to a home-oriented family to hang out, love and play. He has been started on heartworm preventative, vaccinated, and neutered. Additional photos will be emailed to prospective adoptors who submit acceptable applications.
