Update 6/19/08: Buster met a visiting three year old boy today. The little boy was calm and dog-savvy and Buster was happy to meet and play with him. Buster accompanied his foster mom to work this week and he was a big hit with the office. He wants to be a lap dog and there were lots of laps to choose from. At lunchtime, his foster mom took him to the groomer for a nail trim, and Buster behaved quite well.
Buster seems to be a low energy pooch. Some dogs do take a bit of time to bounce back from the trip north, but Buster is extraordinarily mellow even compared to other recent travelers. He likes to be carried around, but he could probably benefit from walking a bit on his own four paws. He does well on a leash. He's most energetic and exuberant when playing with other dogs, and much calmer when he's just around people.
Buster loves his news toys. He makes happy doggy noises while playing. He's also very excited about meal times. He's got a huge appetite for a little guy.
Update 6/16/08: Here's Buster! He's a smallish fellow at about fifteen pounds, but he's got plenty of personality. Buster is all black, except for a white streak on his chest and he has a spiffy curled up tail. He arrived in foster care this weekend, and he's bouncing back from the long trip north.
Buster walks like a tiny gentleman on his leash and he loves that he has some toys to play with. He never had those in the shelter. He's getting along fine with his foster family's other dogs, both of whom are small, too.
Buster seems happily surprised to discover that meals keep coming on a regular basis. The poor little guy was hungry! This is also normal - many dogs don't eat much on the 2 to 3 day journey.
Stayed tuned for more information as Buster settles in.
Buster is urgent because the shelter is full. 5/30 UDATE FROM FOSTER IN ARKANSAS: Buster is doing really really well. He is perfectly crate trained and does his business outside if taken out enough. He thinks he is a big dog and has very little interaction with small dogs but LOVES BIG DOGS. He is vocal, not meaning he barks alot but when he plays makes the cutest noises. He really wants to please and just needs someone to provide guidelines along with love. This poor little fella has never had anyone take ther time to teach him, as he is eager to learn and highly intelligent. he loves his foster mom and is very cuddley and affectionate
Buster was rescued from a horrible place where he had to live in a very small enclosure for 3 weeks without ever getting out. He is very happy now, bouncing around in a fenced yard. He appears to be a Boston Terrier mixed with Chihuahua, and has alot of the same traits as a Boston.
Buster gets along with other dogs and loves to play with a big dog at his foster home. He was alittle possessive of "his human" at first but with guidelines is doing alot better with his jealousy and settling in..
. He is crate trained and doing good on his house training if he is let out often enough but has had a few accidents and needs someone to be patient and work with him.. Because Buster only weighs 15lbs he is too small to adopt to families with small children. He loves his foster mom and follows her everywhere. He will NOT do good in a home that would crate him for long periods of time. He is a real joy and has a very cute personality and that little sparkle in his eyes
All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending.
This dog is Urgent because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $250.00 for altered dogs. $350. for unaltered puppies, with $100 refundable after spay/neuter.
