2/25/08 Update: Bud is a loving but shy dog who just knows the right forever family is out there somewhere! If you're a homebody who likes to snuggle on the sofa, Bud wants to be right there with you.
Bud's foster mother believes that Bud was horribly abused at some point in his life. He is afraid of men and very unsure of children, as they often make sudden movements. Although this fear seems irrational, it's something would-be homes need to be aware of. For this reason, we think the ideal adopter would be a dog-savvy woman. Ideally, she'd have another dog for Bud to play with! He does like other dogs very much, and may draw some confidence from them.
Bud has learned to come when called. He's learning to sit on command, although he still gets scared when anyone tries to touch his hind end. This is normal for a dog who has been beaten.
Bud is great with cats. He just ignores them. Bud shows absolutely no signs of food aggression, and he's not a big barker. Bud is house trained.
Because Bud had a rough start to life, his foster mother believes he should find a forever home with dog-savvy people. He is not a good candidate for a "starter dog." That said, Bud is loyal, gentle and an all-around adorable sweetheart. He just needs a patient, even keeled person to show him that life isn't all bad. If you fit the bill, please inquire about Bud today!
Update February 2008
Bud is doing GREAT in foster care! He is a wonderfully sweet and gentle dog and gets along well with cats and other dogs. Bud is very weary of men and new situations. It is our hope that these fears will dissapate with consistancy and love, but because of his timidity, we are reccomending that he goes to a home without small children.
Bud would greatly benefit from a doggy friend in his perfect home. He seems to look to other dogs for confindence and for play. He does have a slight touch of seperation anxiety, which another dog in the home would help as well.
Bud is perfectly housetrained and is doing well with his recall. He is also learning Sit! Everyone who gets to know this gental soul just loves him.
Update 1/12/08: Bud is thrilled to have arrived in Maine! He was very shy and afraid at first, but he's starting to come around. His foster mother reports that this great little dog is a real sweetheart.
Bud is a mild-mannered fellow, and according to his records, he's about 2 and a half years old. He's happy doing whatever everyone else is doing, whether it's going for walks or lounging around the house. He behaves like a perfect gentleman on a leash and has already mastered "sit." He seems very teachable and eager to learn. Bud is now working on coming when called.
Bud is very gentle, and he's a nice size, at 45 pounds. He loves having his ears scratched and belly rubbed. He goes willingly into his crate, and sleeps there, sometimes with the door open, and sometimes closed.
Bud likes having another dog to play with, and he bonded quickly with his foster family's resident dog, who, at just over a year, is still puppyish. Bud is very, very tolerant of the younger dog's playful antics, and shares toys without an issue. He might like a forever home with a canine friend. Bud has not been cat tested, but he has not given his foster family a reason to anticipate a problem.
Bud is house trained, although like any dog who spent a considerable amount of time in a shelter, he needs to be let out at regular intervals, especially while getting settled into his new home.
His foster mother suspects that Bud may have been mistreated by a man, because he is nervous and timid when meeting new men. He is also skittish about loud, sudden noises. He needs to learn to trust, and to know that his forever family will love him and treat him with the kindness and love this wonderful little fellow deserves.
Please consider adding this adorable young dog to your family!
1/5/08: Bud is a sweetheart! Sudden movements and loud noises still freak him out from time to time. Otherwise, he is a total gem! He walks beautifully on a leash, he goes potty outside (I think he was confused when he arrived about how to communicate with us that he had to go), he takes treats gently, I think I may have tought him to sit.
Bud is truly the most gentle dog I have ever met. He loves to snuggle, absolutly loves having his ears rubbed (or licked by Hoosier), lays down when we eat and doesn't beg, happily sleeps in his crate (door open or closed). He and Hoosier get along great but I don't think Bud really knows how to play yet. He looks at me nervously when Hoosier starts to get riled up, like, is this ok? I would believe he would be perfect with cats since he doesn't seem to want to chase anything, but we don't have one to test him on.
This medium sized boy is alot of fun. He loves to play and loves the water. His nose is to the ground and he's always exploring. Due to lack of space, he is in a small kennel and it just breaks his caretakers heart as he is very friendly and loves people. He deserves a loving home that loves to have fun!!
All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending.
This dog is Urgent because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
