My Story

7/15/09 Brittney is a 6 1/2 month old lab/hound. She weighs about 45 pounds and appears to still have some growing to do.

Brittney’s foster mom says that Brittney walks nicely on her leash. She does not have her nose to the ground all that much and is not a continuous barker. Thunder and lightning do not bother her and she thinks vacuuming is a big game! Since she is still a puppy, she requires a consistent schedule to maintain her housetraining. She behaves very well in her crate and is 100% crate trained. She is still a big chewer and needs to be monitored. She likes to cuddle during down times and loves to give kisses. She loves toys and loves to chase tennis balls. She would love another dog for her to play with but would probably do ok without one. She is very interested in cats. While she probably wouldn’t hurt one, and her interest seems to be in a playful manner, it may be a little too much for some felines. Some obedience training would be good for her.

Update 6/19/09: Brittney made the long trip from Arkansas to foster care in New England this week, and this young, pretty Lab/hound mix is delighted to be here. She's having a great time playing with her foster family's kids and dogs. She loves long walks in the woods, and is learning to walk on a leash.

Brittney is house trained, although, like any young dog, she needs to be let outside regularly. She's not much of a barker.

She is a sweet, affectionate pup who will make a wonderful family dog. Please stay tuned for more updates as she settles in.

Notes from our partner shelter: Brittney is in a foster home and this is what her foster mom has to say : Brittney is a four month old lab / hound mix. She is crate trained and is almost completely house trained. She makes best friends with every dog she meets. She loves to play with other dogs but when they get tired she goes and finds a dog toy or bone to play with. She is in a foster home that has two foster cats. She does great with the cats but will chase them if they run. She will stop chasing them when she is corrected.

She is very sweet and loves to petted. Brittney would do great in a family that has children because she is bery laid back for a puppy. She loves to go on walks and is doing great on a leash. Brittney is looking for a home that will give her lots of love and attention.

Brittney was rescued by our partner shelter in Arkansas from a high kill shelter on her last day. Brittney is so sweet and lovable, she loves everyone! She is about 3-4 months old. She would make a great family dog. She loves other dogs and is great with the cats. She is crate trained and doing very well on her house training. Brittney loves to snuggle!

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
