ABOUT BOSTON: Boston really beat the odds!
We received a last-minute email on a Friday afternoon which read: "We currently
have a two year old, male, neutered purebred Alaskan Malamute in need of rescue.
His name is Boston and his owner relinquished him to us saying her landlord
would not allow her to keep him. We are very full, and because he was
owner-surrendered we can't even offer him the stray hold period. Please let me
know ASAP if you can help him." Though we do our best, we don't always get the
updates up as quickly as we'd like, and there's often new information that isn't
yet posted. If you are interested in Boston, please
EMAIL US
to request more information and/or an adoption application. This
dog's adoption donation is $225. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain!
This dog has had a complete health exam, has already been altered (spayed or
neutered), is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.
What to do if you want to
adopt this dog: Just SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application!
We will review your application to determine if there is a good match
between your family and this dog. We may suggest another if we can offer a
better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.
NOTE:
In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from
shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's
history. We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age
estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective
experience. Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our
care is that of "full disclosure". It is our goal to ensure the
adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between
the dog and the adopting person or family. In some instances, because of
applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of
time. If we have identified a temperament or health condition while
the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to
adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the
issue or condition prior to adoption. Northern Lights' screening process
is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to
treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be
contractually responsible for doing so.
NORTHERN
LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to
foster dogs in need of a second chance.

Well, one look at the photo she sent and we were head over heels for this
soft-eared, sweet-faced boy with his big brown eyes, and arrangements were made
to get him the next day. According to the owner surrender paperwork, his owner
lost her job and had to move to an apartment, where Boston wasn't allowed. She
stated that, while not crate-trained, Boston had lived as an "inside" dog, was
housebroken and did well left alone when confined to a specific room. She stated
that no aggression had EVER been noted toward people or other dogs, and that
he'd been around kids with no problems. The shelter administered SAFER testing
upon his arrival, and he passed with flying colors - meaning, he was found to be
of very sound temperament. Many Malamutes are "chow hounds", but Boston even
passed the food test with no issues whatsoever!
During Boston's first visit at Petco, we quickly figured out that he is just as
NICE as he is handsome! He loved, and was good with, absolutely EVERYONE he met,
be it person or dog. We had a wide range of dogs at Petco that day, and he
wanted to play with every dog he met! Boston is basically a big baby -- his
teeth are as pearly white as a puppy's, and there's something puppyish about his
demeanor. He loved the toys we brought as props, and he'd love to have a toy box
all his own, just as a puppy should have! He liked Savannah, the little girl who
was with us that day.
When a spot opened up, Boston was sent to foster in a setting where there are
lots of other dogs (all sizes, shapes, personalities and both genders) and
plenty of room to play -- and he bloomed like a rose in spring! His foster mom
fell for him immediately -- not surprising, given his charms. She updated us
recently, writing: "Boston is a 100 pound dog who thinks and acts like a puppy.
Because he has been bounced around in his young life, he is shy and nervous in
new situations, and does best with a routine. Boston gets to go to doggy daycare
each day and is loving it! He gets along well with ALL dogs, a trait we don't
often get to see in Malamutes. This big boy is truly a 'gentle giant' and seems
to be unaware of his size, as he will whine when a small dog growls at him. :)
He has overcome his fear of cars and now jumps right in - this stated only to
show how important routine is for him. He is an absolute doll and irresistible.
He will require a bit of an adjustment because of his lack of confidence, but
with time and patience he can overcome all issues. When he puts that big head in
your lap with complete trust you know everything will be OK."
Boston is a genuinely FABULOUS dog who has had to wait a surprising amount of
time for someone to reach out to him. His big heart will more than pay you back
for the love you offer him!
