ADOPTED by Kathy of Athol, ID. Thank you Kathy!!! UPDATE: Blue is being returned due to an inability to get along in a small space with his adopters two other large dogs. Out in open spaces he's fine and loves to romp and play, but once inside, lines are drawn and the three of them are in contention for their own space. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~IN 05-06-06 Coonhounds aren't for everyone and do best with people who understand them. While they can be mellow, laid back and easygoing, the are extremely tenacious hunters and can rarely be content as indoor, pampered lap dogs. Their gentle, friendly temperament suits them just fine to family life, but they do need an outlet for their need to "track, trail and bay". This can be a daily run with a jogger, or a nightly trail walk in the woods. It can also be quenched with a busy child or two and some fuzzy, squeeky dog toys in a large, secure backyard..... It is illegal in most states to allow your Coonhound (or any dog for that matter) to run loose, or run (chase) non-game species or game species out of season and it is your responsibility to make sure that doesn't happen. Coonhounds also have very deep, loud voices and will use them if left alone outside all the time. Being allowed to be part of family life is very important to keeping your new Coonhound happy and healthy. They are above all else, pack dogs, and being a member of your "pack" is just want they thrive on!
Blue came to us as a stray, after the people who found him couldn't get anyone to come looking for him. He has temperment tested most likely NOT a hunting dog or at best, a washout that was never properly trained as he doesn't know that chasing deer is a big NO NO! Luckily for him, our fence stops him short at the end of our 10 acres and he happily troops back up to the house where he lays on the porch and looks proud of himself! He is totally housebroke and gets along GREAT with all dogs in foster care. He is fine with the birds, horses, goats and turkeys, but does jump into the garden area to bay up the rabbits in hutches.. He likes to follow his nose, but will come back readily when called. His manners are great and he is just as gorgeous as they can come. He may be ALL Bluetick, but we are guessing there's some Walker in there with all that white. He knows sit, stay, down, speak and leave it. Somebody must have loved him at one time. He is a bit of a confinement challenge, in that he can and does jump/climb out of our 6' chain link kennel runs, however he respects hot wire and will not test the 4' field fence play-yard with a hotwire inside around the bottom. He doesn't run off when he gets out, just up to the porch to lay down. His favorite pastime is chasing the squirrels up trees and baying them up!
This is a fantastic dog with great manners. He's a go everywhere with you dog. He is not a stay at home in the backyard dog. He is happiest when he's with his people. I swear, he acts way more like a Weimaraner than a Coonhound!! He LOVES people, even the little ones and is SO tolerant of my 3 yr old. daughter. He has taken it upon himself to become her "babysitter" and you can't find her outside without him right beside her or laying just off to the side watching her.
