Update 9/1/2007: Benjamin has ARRIVED IN MAINE. After a VERY long time waiting his turn in our partner shelter in Arkansas, BJ has finally arrived in MAINE. BJ is currently pending adoption for a family in Rindge, New Hampshire.
BJ came to our partner shelter when he was about 6 - 8 weeks old in 2003. He is approximately 3 1/2 years old in these pictures taken August 29, 2007. BJ used to be very enthusiastic when people would visit him and loved to play with people. The young people who used to volunteer at the shelter enjoyed playing with him. Now BJ needs a bit of time to get used to you before he will play. Sadly, BJ has been at the shelter so long without a lot of hands on that he is starting to withdraw. If you can coax him out of his dog house to get a leash on him, he does pretty well on a leash. He does enjoy life though and gets along with his kennel mate, Truffles, and they love to run around the yard and play. BJ desperately needs a foster home or an adopter who is willing to teach him how to trust and live a real dog's life.
Benjamin Jacob has been with our partner rescue in Arkansas since he was 8 weeks old and will be 3 1/2 years old December 2006. Obviously, the folks in Arkansas are not interested in Benjamin Jacob, so now he has an opportunity to be adopted in New England.
This is the story of Benjamin Jacob (BJ) for short.
BJ used to be very enthusiastic when people would visit him and loved to play with people. The young people who used to volunteer at the shelter enjoyed playing with him. Now BJ needs a bit of time to get used to you before he will play. Sadly, BJ has been at the shelter so long without any social exposure that now he is starting to withdraw.
Could that family be your family?
We do not know if he is housetrained, likes cats, or if he would be good with children under 10 (we rarely get children younger than 10 at the shelter). Like 99% of the animals at the shelter, he was picked up as a stray off the street.
If you are interested in BJ, please contact Adele at [email protected]
Please apply quickly, time IS of the essence.

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
