My Story

Meet Big Boy! This gorgeous pup did not have a lot of stability in his young life before he came into our care, but incredibly he has a very sweet and trusting nature. He's a fun-loving, goofy boy who was adopted from a Charlotte shelter as a baby puppy and ended up a stray in a rural SC county shelter only months later. He was adopted again, still very much a puppy, then returned to the shelter a few months later by a family who was not the right fit for a young, active pup. He was failed by the system multiple times but through it all, he's maintained a positive outlook on life's adventures, loves people, and has excellent doggy social skills. Big Boy's luck changed when he caught the eye of one of our seasoned SC foster moms, Laine, who also volunteers at the shelter. She wanted to help him, and after seeing him in regular doggy play groups, felt he would fit in well with her pack. Big Boy started his rescue journey living with Laine, Gary, and their three GSDs. He did great there, learned the rules of home life, and found a buddy and playmate in their youngest dog, Girl. Big Boy is housetrained and crate-trained and can jump a 4.5 ft baby gate without a second thought. He LOVES toys of all kinds, playing chase in the backyard, and frolicking in the resident kiddy pool. He can be vocal when he plays with the other dogs but it's just his style. He likes to talk to them and knows to respect their boundaries. Big Boy has spurts of energy but can also be chill inside the homehe's more of a moderate-energy dog who loves to play. In June, Big Boy came to N. VA to start his new life and is being fostered by our go-to trainer, Alexa. We usually give Alexa pups who need more rehabilitation than a typical foster family can give, and she always does a fabulous job. This time she wanted to foster a fun family dog for a change of pace and Big Boy was perfect. Alexa has two kids, two dogs, and two cats, and Big Boy is respectful to all and has fit in well with his new pack. He's such a natural with other dogs, and a great playmate for client dogs she boards and trains. We think Big Boy is a Husky mixed with a Greyhound. He's tall, but has a svelte build and is all legs! Big Boy is a fun-loving, good-natured, social pup who loves to play and would love a doggie playmate in his new home. He's housetrained and crate-trained, and Alexa is working on his leash skills - he's learning not to pull and keep by her side. She's also working on loose leash skills getting him more engaged with his handler. We checked in with Alexa for a quick update: "Big Boy is such a gem of a dog. He's a really good boy! He wasn't nervous when he first arrived but needed some guidance. I kept him close by me for the first few days so he could get an understanding of our home and how things work here. After day three, it was like he had been living here his whole life. He's done great with my kids and the pack. He is super friendly to dogs, people, and cats. He has also met client dogs and had a buddy Bernadoodle stay with us over the holiday week. They did a lot of romping and playing in the yard and he had a blast. He's a natural with other dogs, very respectful, and takes corrections well from any animal. I think Big Boy needs a fun, active handler, and another dog in the home to play with would be ideal. He makes such a great dog buddy. His leash skills improve every time we go out and he's so trainable. He really wants to please his person and is very food-motivated. We are really enjoying him!" ********** Big Boy loves people and dogs alike. He has a natural zest for life, rides well in the car, and loves to go on new adventures. He greets new people well and hasn't met a dog he doesn't like. We are looking for fun, active owners for Big Boy. Folks who like to go and do and want a pup buddy to join them.
