About BERNICE: Our good friend Chris Strack is owns Tender Loving Pets Doggy Daycare in Indianapolis, which has been voted Indy's Leading Doggy Daycare for the past SIX YEARS running.  There's a reason for Chris' business success.  She is a loving, compassionate person who virtually ALWAYS has a population of 'non-paying' customers - dogs who are getting a new chance at life thanks to her generous heart.  Sometimes these are dogs we have heard about and asked Chris to make room for.  Sometimes they are dogs Chris has heard about through her own network and taken in.  Bernice is one of the latter, and we agreed to help Chris find a great home for her.

Bernice was in a gassing shelter in Ohio, awaiting an unspeakable death in the gas shelter when Chris took her in.  We believe Bernice is a Shepherd mix with perhaps a sprinkling of Husky.  Chris says "Bernice is about six years old, and her physical condition when she came to us spoke to a rough start.  She needed some dental work and some good nutrition.  Her spirit wasn't broken, though, and she always has a smile for you.  She's great with other dogs at the daycare, and spends her days hanging out with up to 35 dogs.  She does great with all of them.  She's not a super high energy dog and wouldn't mind at all being in one of the quieter areas, but she does 'hound' (no pun intended) the smaller dogs ;)  She and Mickey, the 6 month old Husky/Border Collie, share quarters at night and she's great with that.  Bernice has probably been starved at some point in her life and can be protective of her food, so she needs an owner willing to manage her on that count.  Bernice LOVES people, and is great with kids. She'd be an awesome family dog!"

Update:  We had Bernice at a recent Petco event and found her to be a  met a a happy, smiley, waggy dog who made friends with everybody she met, and had plenty of kisses to go around!  Bernice didn't meet a stranger, and just had goodness and happiness shining from her eyes.  She particularly enjoyed the kids.

Her foster mom has taken her home for some breaks from doggy daycare, and had lots of good to say about her, writing: "It's been great seeing Bernice in a home environment. She loves following me around on the riding lawnmower when I cut the grass. She doesn't bark at it or anything -- she's just happy to hang out with me. It's adorable, and she has green paws afterward :) Bernice is housebroken, and knows how to sit. does fine with my dogs including a little Westie I was babysitting for. She loves to ride in the car. She jumped in my car and sat there while I unloaded groceries over the weekend. What Bernice wants more than anything is human attention. At the daycare, she'll lay at my feet while I'm on the computer. She's just so sweet -- loves hugs and pets.

The Latest:  Bernice's foster mom, the owner of Tender Love Pets Doggy Daycare (which means she KNOWS her dogs) was proud to update us on Bernice, writing:  "Bernice is doing great.  I've gotten a good feel for her personality now since I still have her at home.  She is really, really into human attention.  To me she has a personality of a Golden Retriever.  She follows me everywhere, even when I'm on the riding lawnmower!  And she follows me everywhere inside and licks my hands when I'm walking.  Just more info for you.  She loves to splash in the baby pool too and bite the bubbles.  She's SUCH a sweet girl, I pray someone picks her soon -- she's been without a family to call her own for too long, and she has SO MUCH to give!"

Though we do our best, we don't always get the updates up as quickly as we'd like, and there's often new information that isn't yet posted.  If you are interested in BERNICE, please EMAIL US to request more information and/or an adoption application.

This dog's adoption donation is $225. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain! This dog has had a complete health exam, has already been altered (spayed or neutered), is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.

What to do if you want to adopt this dog: Just SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application! We will review your application to determine if there is a good match between your family and this dog.  We may suggest another if we can offer a better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.

NOTE:   In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's history.  We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective experience.  Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our care is that of "full disclosure".  It is our goal to ensure the adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between the dog and the adopting person or family.  In some instances, because of applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of time.  If we have identified a temperament or health condition while the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the issue or condition prior to adoption.  Northern Lights' screening process is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be contractually responsible for doing so.

NORTHERN LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to foster dogs in need of a second chance.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE BY FOSTERING FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS, EMAIL US FOR INFO AND AN APPLICATION!   For answers to FAQ regarding who we are, as well as our adoption policies and practices, please VISIT OUR PETFINDER HOME PAGE.
