Dear Santa and Mrs. Santa: All my foster brothers and sisters are writing to you tonight and my foster mom says I should too. I have never had Christmas, so I am not sure what I should write. Everyone is asking for toys and bones but I wish I had the following:
1. My own Mom and Dad who would love me unconditionally like my foster parents do. 2. A large breed brother or sister to hang out with 3. Somone who will work with my fears and help me through them. 4. Someone with experience with the Rottweiler breed.. I am unique yeah know!
But if you can only fit one wish in your bag, could you please give me a mom and dad? I really am so sad without a home to call my own.
Updated 11/15/06 from Bensons foster mom: "Benson has been in our foster home for almost a month now, and has changed quite a bit! He may be 5 years old, but he has discovered his "puppy" side! He LOVES playing ball and chewing up his stuffed toys. He get's very excited now to go into the car, and takes a running leap! He is still shy of new people, but takes cues from his foster brothers who are large dogs as well. If they seem to like the people, and being pet by them... then Benson joins right in. I would reccommend that Benson still have a large friendly dog in his new home to contuine his learning. Benson is house trained. He has not had an accident once in the house since we have gotten him. He LOVES to be pet and cuddled. Belly rubs are a must for this dog! He has many Rotti qualities including the famous Rotti lean! He will push right into your legs, turn his body into you and lean for pets. It is the cutest thing! He does not jump on people, but has learned that the furniture is a great place to sleep. He is very respectful and is not dominant over anyone including our existing pets in the home. I have been able to trim his nails without any help. He has a very soft mouth, and will drop anything he isn't supposed to have. He does counter surf, and will steal food off of the counter, but is respectful of baby gates :) Now that Benson has become comfortable in our home, we will begin working on basic commands with him.... he seems very willing to please and I suspect to see some great results shortly. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this boy. If we were not commited to fostering and helping out other dogs in need, then Benson would be here forever. He is that great of a guy :)"
10/16/06: This handsome loving 5 year old Shep/Rotti mix is such a great dog, but needs someone willing to help him adjust to our luxury lifestyle in New England. He has only known life outdoors, and his starting to adjust to living in a home. Benson is shy of fast movements, and is learning a hand is nothing to be afraid of. He is working on his housetraining, and sleeps through the night on a bed next to ours. Benson really likes to be brushed to sleep, and enjoys being covered with a blanket on his bed at night :)
He would do best in a home with a friendly outgoing dog who can help show him the ropes. Older, quieter children ok. He doesn't mind our small or large dogs, and ignores the cats. He does not climb on the furniture as the rest of our crew does!
Benson is learning that getting into the car is not a scarey thing, as it brings you to fun places. We still need to pick up this 84# boy and put him in the SUV though! He enjoys going for walks and does well on a leash. We would recommend that Benson go to a home that has experience with working breeds or Rottweiler experience.
Please check back, as I am sure Benson will be changing into a great family dog in no time. He already wants to be loved so much, and enjoys when people spend time with him. He has changed so much just within a few days.. won't you give him a chance?
