My Story

2/18/10 Belle is only about 33 pounds, and approx 9 years old. She has many years left showing you what a loving gentle sweet soul she has!!

Update from Belle's foster mom.

Belle is just the best dog ever! What a sweetheart. She settled into a routine right away and is low maintenance. She's got a wonderful personality - loving and mellow inside and peppy and spunky outside. She loves the snow! She likes to eat it and roll in it and frolic in it. It's quite comical. She'll run and jump and spin which totally denies her age. She likes being outside either walking (she walks well on a leash) or playing in the snow. Belle also thoroughly enjoys being patted, especially those coveted belly rubs. She can be lulled to sleep just by rubbing her tummy. It's cute. And she's so nice about asking for love/attention, not an in-your-face obnoxious way. She'll mostly come and sit in front of us to be patted. She loves cuddling up with us too (especially being in the middle). She'll put her head on you to snuggle in. It's wonderful. Belle is excited to see us whether we've been gone for a little while or just out of the room for a couple of minutes. When we get home, she's very excited to see us and gives kisses and has this little moany-groany thing to express her complete joy in seeing us. She'll also do it for her meals too. Other than that, she doesn't say boo. Very quiet (she hasn't barked as of yet). If you are looking for a watch dog, she's not the one. She doesn't bark when people come in. It takes her just a few minutes to warm up to new people then she loves the attention from them as well. She is the best little companion dog one could ask for.

February 2010 Update. Belle is in foster care in Maine. This is what her foster mom says about Belle.

"Adorable! That's what Little Miss Belle is. Simply adorable. She is just the cutest little thing ever. Belle has been with us just over a day now and has settled in very nicely. Her car ride home was uneventful as she was trying to nap despite the bumpy road. At home, Belle poked around a little bit to investigate her new surroundings and she took to her big doggie bed right away and snuggled into that.

Belle is quite affectionate, gives kisses and loves attention. Demure and gentle, she asks for affection and takes treats like a lady. She certainly likes 'her people' preferring to sleep on the big people bed instead of her doggie bed, snuggling on the couch between us and asking for some loving to whomever is closest. Today we went for a walk (which she did well on) and then for a visit.

Belle does well with meeting people. Though the cats were curious about her, she paid no mind to them, instead napping on the couch with her head in a lap. Everyone loved her and she loved everyone. Belle will make the perfect little companion to a special family that adopts her. At 33 pounds, she's kind of a bigger small-sized dog or a small medium-sized dog, if that makes sense. She's a perfect size - not too big, not too little. She's wonderful!

October Updates:Belle is approximately 9 years old in October 2009 BETTER. PICTURES TO COME, these were taken with a cell phone from the foster home in Arkansas. She was found by one of the shelter volunteers lying next to a busy road. It was rainy and cold out. Luckily, Belle was just wet and cold. She was big and pregnant but lost the babies. Belle is medium size at 33 lbs.

The foster mom says that she gets along well with all of her dogs except for the small one for some reason. However, it doesn't matter what the size or the age of the human, she loves them all.

Belle does not have any food aggressions. Does well on a leash and is house trained. She doesn't like riding in the care much, but perhaps this is because she thinks she is getting dropped off somewhere.

On October 17, 2009, Belle was tested for Heartworms/Lyme/Ehrlichia and given her rabies. She is on HW preventative

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO A LOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS A LOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVALENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
