My Story

Bella (approx 7 yrs) and Harley (approx 15 yrs) are a bonded pair of dachshunds looking for their forever home. They came from a home with many dogs, but once their owner moved into nursing care, she was no longer able to care for them. They have been in foster care for just over a year. They both love being outside, sniffing around and rolling in the grass. Bella loves squeaky toys and playing a little fetch and tug with her humans. Once she gets to know you she loves to snuggle in. Harley is an old man and mostly lounges, naps and follows his sister around. Don’t let their age fool you, mornings are their favorite. After getting their morning meal they are happy kids and like to steam roll each other and talk loudly (play growls) at each other. It’s the cutest! Bella loves to take short walks, and Harley follows along in our dog stroller as his back hips aren’t the greatest. To get onto the couch they use dog stairs, though Harley is starting to need a bit more help with those. Bella is able to maneuver most stairs, but Harley cannot. Bella is very food motivated, and can resource guard her food when it comes to other dogs, so we feed her separately. Harley has special kidney food and needs to have it softened for him to eat. Bella did have some mammary tumors removed, but yearly vet visits need to make sure they don’t return. Harley has some kidney issues and his teeth are not very good, but because of his age, it was determined unsafe for him to go under. He is mostly deaf and blind but he is such a happy dog with so much love to give. They generally get along with other dogs. They don’t play with other dogs, only each other. Bella can resource guard toys, food and humans, and it’s preferred they are the only resident dogs, but not required so long as a meet up happens first. Bella and Harley are wonderful dogs and will out a smile on the face of whomever is lucky enough to welcome them home! It's not how many times you fall, but how many times you get back up that is important. Bella and Harley have been completely vetted and is ready to be adopted. - You must fill out an adoption application before you are allowed to meet the animal. Please complete the adoption application located on our website: https://smalldogsminnesota.org/adoption-application/ - Small Dog Rescue of MN does not negotiate the adoption fee on our dogs and we must charge sales tax on all adoption fees in order to comply with Minnesota state law. Please note that SDR is philosophically opposed to the idea of buying and selling animals, and we support any future legislation that would remove sales tax from adoption fees. Until then, however, it must be charged. - Please note that we do not have a shelter, and all dogs are in foster homes. Since we strive to provide the best possible care for our animals, sometimes we cannot answer emails promptly. Please allow 48 hours for us to respond to you. - You must be 18 years of age to make an adoption request. - A healthy pet is a happy pet!
