UPDATE --- Becky is in Maine! Here's what her foster has to say -- stay tuned for pictures
5/29/07: Becky is a small bundle of energy (maybe ~20lb soaking wet) - she is all black with a white speckled patch on her chest. She looks like a miniture black lab, is very intelligent and points at almost everything. She loves to cuddle - and believes that all people are her friends. She appears to have her secondary teeth so may be as old as 6 months - but still very young. She knows her name, as well as the words down and no. She is learning to sit and we're working on house training.
Becky LOVES to play - especially games of chase with the other dogs (Becky is currently living with two large dogs (~80lb each) and enjoys the company of both). She really enjoys being outdoors - preferably with her people. She doesn't seem to bother much with the chickens in the yard - though is interested in checking them out in a friendly/curious manner. Water is a favorite - be it in a bowl, a running stream, a puddle, or a hose. She walks very well on a leash - though when she gets tired she does a lot of jumping for attention - and boy can she jump! She is crate trained, and will settle down in her crate within a couple of minutes though she sometimes barks at first. She also sleeps through the night after an amount amount of play/excercise.
Becky will make a wonderful family member - she loves to be active, but enjoys resting afterwards - and easily trained as she is very intelligent and highly motivated to please and for food. She is recovering from a silght case of demodex (skin mites) from the stress of being in the shelter. This is non-contagious and easily treated---nothing to worry about!
Becky is an active puppy. She is about 4 mos old. She loves to run and loves the water. She will drink out of the water hose. She also splashes the water out of the water bowls in the pen. She enjoys chasing the chickens, but will stop when she hears the AGHNNNN sound from me. She is really a smart dog and will be easy to train.
This just in from Becky's foster: Since they are puppies, they won't stop to pose and we aren't fast enough when they sit still for their 30 seconds. Waldo is very gentle, laid-back, and minds wells. Becky likes to play, play, play. We were watering flower beds and they both had to have a drink out of the water hose just like small children would want a drink. Then Becky had to run in the water...not the best situation for the beds, but fun, fun, fun, for Becky. She LOVES the water, whether in a bowl, a hose or a pool!
They both will go back in their pen without much coaxing. (A first for us). Just rattle the food container and in they go. We will try again with pictures...Becky is probably a lab, shepard, beagle, etc mix! :)
4/23/07 Becky came into the shelter on 03/24/2007 with the Waldo bunch! I don't know if they are related, she looks nothing like them!!!!!1 She has tiny stature and a white streak down her chest. She is a feisty thing!!! Becky appears to be around 3 months old and weighs between 10 to 15 pounds as of 4/23.
All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending. For PUPPIES: SEE BELOW
This dog is Urgent because the shelter it is in is in Arkansas and is overfull, therefore dogs and puppies alike are on the euthanasia list. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us nasty letters about why we euthanize, this is not our choice, we do not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many of them as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
