My Story

Please read full description! Beatty is a Formosan Mountain Dog (Taiwan Dog) - which is the native/indigenous breed of Taiwan. Doing some research on this breed can help you get a better understanding of Beatty, too, though we are happy to answer questions. For the most part, Taiwan dogs are rescued as puppies or young adults from the streets (or literally from the side of mountains) and then rehabbed and trained in Taiwan before being transferred to rescues all around the world for adoption. Some people love the breed, some don't - and that's okay! It's important to note that they generally come from long lines of feral dogs, and while they are good with people and dogs, they can be very averse to strangers. They will bark, growl, and sometimes nip, but with patience and training (and slow introductions to new people) they are great. They're generally one-person dogs, and attach themselves to one family member. They are well socialized with dogs and enjoy having canine friends. Beatty is no exception. He is eccentric, to say the least. He barks like crazy at new people, but once he knows them he's very well behaved and seeks attention. He does nip when frustrated or excited, and while he's never had a major bite, or broken the skin, he needs to be in an adult-only home. Because he can scare strangers (and doesn't like them much anyway) he can be crated in another room while people are over to keep everybody comfortable, or a slow introduction to new people works and he can make friends. He does like other dogs and gets along extremely well with them, although he's not always in the mood to play. He has lived with a cat and did okay, so homes with cats can be considered. Beatty can be adopted into an only dog home or into a home with another dog of any size. What he really needs and would thrive with would be a home with adults only without a lot of visitors on a regular basis, who loves to hike, run, walk, and play in the yard. He can always use training, though he is pretty well behaved. Our volunteers have a lot of fun with him because he is so sassy. He will tell you what he's thinking and then suddenly be sitting like the goodest boy waiting for a toy or a snack. He's a great dog, and a lot of people describe Formosans as being very "cat-like" - independent and sometimes aloof, but great dogs nonetheless. If you're looking for a dopey labrador that loves everyone and everything, he's not the right dog for you, but if you're looking for a dog with a funny personality and that would thrive with one-on-one attention or as a companion for your playful, social dog, you're looking in the right place.
