My Story

*PLEASE NOTE*: Expressing interest on PetFinder is welcome and encouraged, but all adoption applications must be submitted through the Rescued Rescuers website for consideration. Thank you for choosing to adopt! https://therescuedrescuers.org/adoption-application Name: Barkley Age: 6-7 yo Weight: 13lbs Sex/Spayed or Neutered?: Male/neutered Coat: long haired Color: dark reddish Energy Level: medium Adoption fee: $300 Contact: [email protected] **Local Adoption Only : Must be within 2hr drive of Fort Walton Beach FL** * Please read entire profile * We would like to introduce RR’s newest addition to the rescue, Barkley! He sure is a looker but he just might actually be the most stubborn dachshund we’ve ever had in our rescue. This handsome boy was adopted from our rescue a few years ago and recently turned back in due to an extreme change in behavior. We aren’t sure what flipped the switch in him as he was a good boy for a couple years. But his previous owner said that in the last year or so he has all of a sudden done a 180 in his personality. We are still working on seeing if there is a medical explanation for this change in behavior but until then, foster mom has been working with him around the clock to try to tame his stubborn ways. The first problem is Barkley hates to be brushed, groomed, bathed, to wear a harness or collar, or to be picked up. He DOES like being petted once you give him some space initially and let him sniff your hand and proceed to pet him slowly. He will go up the doggie ramp onto the couch and snuggle foster mom when he decides he was some attention. He will even rub his snoot on your hand to keep you petting him. Barkley’s second problem is that he likes to bark. He will bark when people come in the house , when he wants attention and also for no reason. His barking has actually gotten 90% better since he’s been in his foster mom‘s house and has started on some anti-anxiety medication. We still think that Barkley would not do well in an apartment/ condo living situation. And lastly, Barkley will not go potty outside. He has been with foster mom for about two weeks now and has only gone potty outside once. Again, we are not sure if there is a medical condition that is causing this and we’ll be doing further testing. Foster mom does feel very confident that once he gets in a home environment and used to a routine and schedule, he has great potential to learn to be a good boy and go potty outside. He has also started to go potty on a peepee pad so that might be a good solution! On the flip side, Barkley seems to be okay with other small, calm dogs. He also loves crinkly toys. He is seemingly very healthy and has a wonderful set of teeth! For an experienced Dachshund owner and lover, his issues may seem very minor. And we certainly hope that’s true. Dachshunds are known to be very stubborn, “barky” and nippy. We just want to avoid someone wanting to adopt Barkley just because of his looks. He truly is a sweet boy and loves his main person. We believe that with a lot of patience, love and consistency, Barkley will blossom to be a 100% good boy. Also, it goes without saying due to nipping behavior, Barkley will not be adopted to a home with kids or any kids that come visit.
